In 1980 and 1984, Robin Theresa Campbell-Bennett (born January 25, 1959 in Washington, D.C.) became a U.S. Olympian at 800 meters.
She competed in every Olympic Trial from 1972 to 1984. She took the silver medal at 800 meters in 1980 at the Golden Bell Classic, running 2:02.53, defeating Yvonne Mondesire of Canada 2:02.33 and Ann Mackie-Morelli of Canada 2:02.63. When winning the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she ran her best 800 meters time of 1:59.00.
She placed fifth at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki, Finland, later this year. At the 1972 Olympic Trials, she won the Exhibition Races for girls 14 and under at both 200 meters and 1500 meters under her age 13.
Her times were fast enough to make the US Olympic team, but she was still too young to qualify. In 1975 and 1974, Campbell won the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at 400 meters.
At 800 meters, she came in second at eight consecutive U.S. Indoor Championships. The Mt. was open on April 25-April 27, 1975.
She competed in both the 400 meters in 53.5 and the 800 meters in 2:11.6 in California and now lives in Washington, D.C., where she is the head of the Fifth Man Track Athletic Club.
She attended Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida; University of Florida, Gainesville; and San Jose State College, California, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal studies and a minor in women's studies.
She served on the Drug Testing Committee, Cultural Exchange Committee, and USA Track & Field's Youth Sports Committee.
She is a member of the Olympic Alumni Association, Women's Sports Foundation, Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse, Fifth Man Track Club, and Potomac Valley Track Club.
