Robert Kenneth Shaye (born March 4, 1939) is an American businessman, film producer, writer, and director of New Line Cinema.
Early life
Shaye was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Dorothy and Max Mendle Shaye, a grocery store owner and artist. His mother was an immigrant from Russia. Lin Shaye is the brother of actor Lin Shaye.
Shaye graduated from Detroit's Mumford High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan as well as a J.D. Columbia Law School conferred a degree. He received his Fulbright Scholar degree from the University of Stockholm. Shaye is a member of the New York State Bar Association, and he has served on the board of trustees for the Neuroscience Institute, the American Film Institute, and the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation.
Shaye founded New Line Cinema in 1967. The company began with a series of feature films and shorts that were rented to colleges. From there, New Line expanded to re-releases such as Reefer Madness and the first-run domestic distribution of foreign films such as Get Out Your Handkerchiefs. A Nightmare on Elm Street and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were among the first blockbuster films released by the New Line.
The Turner Broadcasting System bought New Line Cinema on January 28, 1994, with Shaye earning more than $100,000. Turner Broadcasting System became a part of Time Warner (which is now known as WarnerMedia), a merger between Time Inc. and Warner Communications that occurred in 1996.
When Peter Jackson, the New Zealand filmmaker, brought his 25-minute pitch reel for a big screen adaptation of J.R.R., it was 1998. Tolkien's fantasy masterpiece The Lord of the Rings has migrated to the New Line, with the intention of converting the three volumes into two films. Shaye suggested that Jackson make three films instead. He then approved a simultaneous production of all three series. A total of thirty Academy Awards were given to the Lord of the Rings, with 17 of them winning 17, including 11 for The Return of the King. All three films at the box office are among New Line's most popular films, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide.
