Robert Ludlum Career

Life and career

Ludlum was born in New York City, the son of Margaret (née Wadsworth) and George Hartford Ludlum. He was educated at the Rectory School, Cheshire Academy, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he received a B.A. In 1951, drama was a hit in the city.

He had been a United States Marine, a stage actor, and producer before becoming an author. He appeared at the Grant Lee theater in Fort Lee, New Jersey, in the 1950s. He curated and produced shows at the Playhouse on the Mall at Bergen Mall in Paramus, New Jersey, from 1960 to 1970. His theatrical experience may have contributed to his discovery of the invigoration, escapism, and movement that the public desired in a novel. "I equate suspense and good theater in a very similar way," he said once. I think it's all suspense and what-happens-next. Yes, I suppose, I am dramatic," I guess from that angle.

Several of Ludlum's books have been turned into films and mini-series, including The Osterman Weekend, The Holcroft Covenant, The Apocalypse Watch, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum. The Hades Factor, a book co-written with Gayle Lynds, was originally intended as a mini-series; the book was inspired by a brief essay written for NBC by Ludlum. The Bourne films, starring Matt Damon in the title role, have been commercially and critically acclaimed (The Bourne Ultimatum received three Academy Awards in 2008), but the story lines are not entirely different from the source material.

Ludlum lived in Leonia, New Jersey, where he spent hours each day writing at his house.

Ludlum died of a heart attack on March 12, 2001 at his Naples, Florida home, although recovering from serious burns caused by a mysterious fire that occurred on February 10, 2001.

Ludlum Entertainment, the company that handled all merchandising for Ludlum's activities on Ludlum's estate, has signed an agreement with Vivendi Universal Games to control video game rights to the games for a 10-year deal. In 2008, the license came to an end. The Ludlum estate inked a deal with Universal Pictures on November 20, 2008, in order to produce feature films based on Robert Ludlum's creations. After Activision acquired Vivendi Games' assets, Ludlum sold the rights to his work to Electronic Arts on February 2, 2009.

The Mini Cooper is the most iconic British-built car of all time, survey shows - but did your favourite make the top 40 list?

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 10, 2024
The Mini Cooper has been voted the most iconic British-built car of all time, according to a new survey of motorists. The poll of 2,000 car aficionados found that a third of Brits (27 per cent) feel affection towards the small motor, beating even the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (23 per cent) and James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 (22 per cent) to the top spot. While Jaguar came out on top for Britain's favourite manufacturer, the classic Mini - now celebrating its 65th birthday - cemented its position as a global icon with its famed appearance in The Italian Job (1969).
