He was pronounced dead at 6.14pm on Thursday at Holman Prison in southern Alabama, his last words a plea for forgiveness. The parole hearing of an 'evil' killer is to be heard behind closed doors, his victim's family have been told. British Airways captain Robert Brown used a claw hammer to bludgeon his estranged wife Joanna Simpson, 46, to death on Halloween in 2010, within earshot of their young son and daughter. Extraordinarily, despite having dug a grave for Joanna in advance, he was only convicted of manslaughter. As a result, despite being given a 26 year sentence, he was due for automatic release last year - half way through. That was only stopped when enraged relatives launched a campaign and lobbied the Government. The then Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk, eventually ordered a review of the case, which stopped Brown, 60, being freed automatically because it was 'unsafe' to do so.

Minimum sentences for murders which take place in the home will increase from 15 to 25 years, the Conservative Party's manifesto will say. The Prime Minister will also pledge a review of the current distinction between manslaughter and murder which could lead to more killers being convicted of the more serious crime. The moves would affect cases similar to that of former British Airways pilot Robert Brown who killed his estranged wife Joanna Simpson in 2010. Ms Simpson, 46, was bludgeoned to death with a claw hammer at their formal marital home in Ascot, Berks, in 2010 as their two children cowered in a playroom.
