Playing career
He appeared in 11 games for the Waitakere City Raiders in 1994, winning three tries.
Paul came from New Zealand at the age of 18 in July 1994 and has since continued to represent New Zealand. After months of sitting in the reserves, he made his Bradford debut.
As Super League and summer rugby arrived, Aussie coach Brian Smith, who made Paul captain, was assassinated. Bradford defeated Leeds at Huddersfield, the former Challenge Cup winners.
Paul captained Bradford at scrum half in the 1996 Challenge Cup Final, becoming the fourth player to reach what was a Challenge Cup final record of three tries and winning the Lance Todd Trophy for man-of-the-match. He was the top try scorer for the Bradford Bulls in 1996 and still holds the record for most tries scored for the Bulls.
Paul started training with Harlequins rugby union Harlequins in the winter.
In the 1999 Super League Grand Finals, Paul played for Bradford Bulls as his brother Henry's halves companion. Paul was chosen for the New Zealand team to compete in the 1999 Rugby League Tri-Nations tournament at the end of season. In the Kiwis' 22-20 loss, he partnered Henry in the halves, kicking six goals.
In their 2001 Super League Grand Final victory over the Wigan Warriors, Paul played for the Bradford Bulls as his brother Henry's halves partner. The Bulls defeated the Newcastle Knights, 2001 NRL Premiers, in the 2002 World Club Challenge as champions of Super League VI. In Bradford's victory, Paul captained the stand-off half back and scored two tries. In their 2002 Super League Grand Final loss against St. Helens, Paul played for the Bradford Bulls at a stand-off half back, scoring a try.
In 2003, Paul led the Bulls to the "treble" on the internet. In their 2003 Super League Grand Final victory over the Wigan Warriors, he appeared for the Bradford Bulls from the interchange bench. In the 2004 World Club Challenge, he led the Bulls to victory over Penrith Panthers from Australia. In 2004, the Bradford Bulls lost at hooker against the Leeds Rhinos in the 2004 Super League Grand Finals. In 2005, he was playing for the Bradford Bulls off the interchange bench against the Leeds Rhinos.
On January 27, 2006, his Bradford Bulls testimonial was played against Hull Kingston Rovers at Odsal Stadium. He has been included in Bradford's 'Millennium Masters', 'Bull Masters,', and in August 2007 he was named in the 'Team of the Century.' In both three lists, only six players have been included. At 20 years old, Robbie Paul was named as the 1996 Super League Player of the season.
Paul moved from Bradford Bulls to the Huddersfield Giants, a fellow West Yorkshire team. In August's 2006 Challenge Cup Final, he was competing at scrum half back. Despite scoring a second-half run, his side lost 42–12 to St Helens R.F.C. Twickenham Stadium.
In September 2007, it was reported that he had signed for the Salford City Reds on a two-year contract. Since the club had just been kicked out of the Super League, it seemed to be something of a coup for the club.
For the 2010 season, Leigh Centurions, a Cooperative Championship team, has been contracted. At the end of the 2011 season, he retired.
