Richard Gordon "Rik" Emmett (born July 10, 1953) is a vocalist, guitarist, member of the Canadian rock band Triumph.
Career
Emmett left Triumph in 1988 to pursue a solo career. Absolutely, his first solo album, was released in 1990 and became a moderate success throughout the United States and Canada thanks to the hits "When a Heart Breaks," "Big Lie" and "Saved by Love." He is also a writer for Guitar Player magazine and teaches song-writing and music business at Humber College in Toronto. Emmett contributed cartoons to Hit Parader magazine, satirizing the music industry for a time in the 1980s.
Emmett shortened the spelling of his first name to "Rik" rather than have the album remembered or cause confusion among fans, owing to a production mistake by Gil Moore and Mike Levine on Triumph's first album.
Despite being best known as a rock guitarist, his playing style incorporates rock, blues, jazz, classical, bluegrass, and flamenco techniques. His songwriting and discography, in turn, display his ability to incorporate and blend several genres. He received the Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year in April 2005.
Emmett is also a good singer, splitting lead vocal duties of Triumph with Gil Moore. However, the bulk of the songs that were getting radio play were Emmett's as he tended to write and sing in a more commercial manner, while Moore's song-writing and singing were more in the style of a heavy metal style. Emmett's voice has also a similarity to Geddy Lee (of Rush), contributing to the band's sound being compared to Rush.
Emmett was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2007 by former Triumph bandmates Gil Moore and Mike Levine. Triumph was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2008 on Sunday, April 6, 2008. (CARAS).
Emmett and guitarist Dave Dunlop formed the pair Strung-Out Troubadours as a result of positive audience reaction to their dual guitar performances on live shows. They were named 'Album of the Year' and 'Group/Duo of the Year' at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards in 2007, where they were the most widely nominated act. Both were also selected for the 'Best Guitarist' category.
Emmett's 2018 tour with Dunlop may be his last, citing an interest in retirement or at least a long break.
Emmett is on hiatus from touring as of January 2019.
