Rico Hizon (born March 24, 1966) is a Filipino broadcast journalist with BBC World News.
He anchors Newsday and Asia Business Report, which is distributed to more than 400 million households around the world.
He is the first Filipino news anchor to work for two of the world's most respected television news networks - CNBC Asia and BBC World News.
Education
Hizon taught Radio, Television, and Broadcasting at De La Salle University after earning a degree in Communication Arts and Business. Honoris Causa from the University of Northeastern Philippines, Doctorate Degree in Humanities.
Career
Hizon began his broadcast career with GMA Network in Manila, where he was in charge of reporting capital markets, banking and finance, real estate, and corporate development from 1988 to 1995. From the trading floor of the Philippine Stock Exchange, he anchored the daily business program, Business Today, GMA News Live, and Stock Market Live from Business Today. Hizon received the "Outstanding Young Men for Broadcast Journalism" award during his tenure.
Hizon joined CNBC Asia in April 1995, first based in Hong Kong and later in Singapore, where he was the principal anchor of CNBC Today's morning editions, Squawk Box, Market Watch, and Power Lunch.
Hizon joined BBC World News in 2002 and anchored the daily business and finance program Asia Business Report and Asia Today live from Singapore Monday to Friday. Hizon has co-presented Newsday, a news bulletin service on the BBC from Singapore with Babita Sharma in London, since June 2011. He was also a regular on World Business Report as an Asian business reporter. Following Typhoon Haiyan, Rico hosted Newsday live from Tacloban, Philippines, in November 2013. Hizon co-presented the BBC Newsday programme from New Broadcasting House, London, with Babita Sharma in Singapore for a short period in January 2014.
Hizon emerged from the London newsroom once more in May 2017, with Sharanjit Leyl taking over Singapore's presenting duties. Hizon's return to Singapore for the next week was revealed that this was only for a week. Hizon revealed on his Instagram account in March 2020 that he would be leaving BBC News after 17 years.
Hizon would return to the Philippines and join CNN Philippines as senior anchor and director for news content creation just a few weeks later. According to a memo sent out by CNN Philippines president Armie Jarin-Bennett, Hizon will take over the 9 PM newscast. On his Twitter page, he also revealed that he had migrated to the network.
Hizon's late-night newscast The Final Word, as well as anchoring CNN Philippines' newest business show, The Exchange, launched in July, established his presence in his native Philippines. Hizon was also part of the network's State of the Nation Address coverage in the Philippines this month, his first SONA coverage in the Philippines since 1995. Starting with the network's 2 p.m. coverage, he anchor and senior Anchor and Correspondent Pinky Webb until the President's address ended and published a post-SONA report by ADR Stratbase analyst Dindo Manhit and former Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.
