Rick Steves Career

Early life and career

Richard John Stevens Jr. was born in Barstow, California, to parents Richard John Steves, a high school band director and piano technician, and June Erna Steves née Fremmerlid. June Erna Fremerlid, his mother, was born to Norwegian immigrants Harold and Erna Fremmerlid. Jan and Linda are his two sisters. In 1967, the family moved to Edmonds, Washington.

When Steves was 14 years old, he and his parents went to Europe to see the piano factories. The family owned "Steves Sound of Music," where they manufactured and sold pianos as well as tuned pianos. He narrated what he saw and experienced on postcard backs that he numbered sequentially. He still has all of his cards in a wooden box. During the Apollo 11 moon landing in Norway, Steves came to the realization that would influence him throughout his life: "This planet must be home to billions of similarly loved children of God." He returned to Europe when he was 18 years old, but not with his parents. He wrote journals of all of those events as well.

Steves attended the University of Washington, majoring in European history and business administration, and graduated in 1978.

Steves began teaching travel classes at The Experimental College, a student-run non-credit school at his alma mater, the University of Washington, and as a tour guide in the summer. He began working as a piano tutor at the time. He wrote the first edition of Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a general guide to traveling in Europe based on his travel experiences in 1979. In 1980, Steves' first edition of his travel skills book ETBD appeared. "Anyone caught reprinting any content herein for any reason whatsoever would be thanked profusely," the book said on a page. Unlike most guidebook writers, he opened a storefront store. This was both a travel center and a piano teaching studio at first. He taught travel classes and slide show presentations, performed travel coaching, planned a few group tours a year, and redesigned his books. He did not offer ticket reservation or other common travel agency services. "Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door" was his company name, according to him. The store was located in Edmonds, Steves' hometown, north of Seattle. The company's headquarters is still in Edmonds. Travels in Europe with Rick Steves debuted on public television in April 1991 and then stopped production in 1998. Rick Steves' Europe, his second series, premiered in September 2000 and has aired episodes through 2020, but not because he does not produce a season every year; this accounts for 11 seasons.

Tourists in the United States discuss the BAFFLING cultural difference between Europe and the United States

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 14, 2023
Brenna, a TikTok user who uses the handle @br3nnyough, went viral after posting a video of her and her friends chugging bottles of water in an undisclosed European city. In the on-screen text, she wrote, 'In the moment we can find water because Europeans don't believe in water.' Many Europeans, expats, and visitors were perplexed by the assertion, who pointed out that in many cities around the continent, there are drinking fountains with great tap water. However, other travelers in the United States had similar experiences while traveling abroad.
