Renato Russo Career

Musical career

He played bass for Abortion Elétrico (Electric Abortion) for four years from 1978 to 1982, but the band came to a halt due to constant tensions between Fê Lemos, the drummer, and Renato. Despite the fact that the band did not last long, Renato Russo recorded several songs that would later become hits of Capital Inicial (founded by the remaining members of Aborto Elétrico) and Legisso Urbana (founded by Renato Russo).

Renato began a solo career as the "Trovador Solitário" after Aborto Elétrico's demise. (Lonely Minstrel). This period lasted just a few months, as Marcelo Bonfá (the drummer of the band Dado es Reino Animal), Eduardo Paraná (guitar player) and Paulo Guimares (keyboard player, known as Paulo Paulista) joined Legio Urbana in 1982. Renato was both the lead singer and bassist. They were influenced by The Smiths' post punk bands of the time, especially Robert Smith of The Cure and Morrissey.

Eduardo Paraná and Paulo Paulista left the band after just a few shows. The band's original line-up was taken over by Dado Villa-Lobos, who designed the iconic line-up. Renato Rocha as a bassist from 1984 to 1989, and the band also had Renato Rocha as a bassist.

Renato Russo, the head of Legia, reached the height of his career as a writer, earning a cult status among his followers.

He used to write long songs. For instance, the Dylan-esque "Faroeste Caboclo" lasts until 9:05, and "Metal Contra as Nuvens" is 11:29 minutes. In ten minutes, the song "Fátima" was composed. In the 1990s, he released two solo albums, with both English and Italian songs.
