Career

Earlier in his career, a Workman was active in jazz bands led by Gigi Gryce, Donald Byrd, Duke Jordan, and Booker Little. In 1961, Workman joined the John Coltrane Quartet, replacing Steve Davis. He appeared at the Village Vanguard sessions of the saxophonist and also appeared with a second bassist (Art Davis) on the 1961 album Olé Coltrane. Following a European tour, a workman left Coltrane's company at the end of the year.

Jymie Merritt, a long-serving Blakey bassist, and the majority of his time in the Jazz Messengers, 1962, Workman joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (replacing long-time Blakey bassist Jymie Merritt) and spent time with Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Cedar Walton. In 1964, a workman left Blakey's company.

Besides James Moody, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann, and Thelonious Monk, the workman appeared with James Moody, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann, and Thelonious Monk. He has performed with Archie Shepp, Lee Morgan, and David Murray. The Super Jazz Trio was formed in 1978 by a workman, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and drummer Joe Chambers.

He is now a professor at The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City and, with Oliver Lake and Andrew Cyrille, he was a member of Trio 3.
