Music critics generally applauded Supernova's reception. The album has eight reviews and a Metacritic score of 78, indicating that it received "mainly positive" feedback. Will Hermes rated the album three and a half out of five, saying, "Predictably, [Dan] Auerbach [as producer] aids the singer in pulling bright colors from the Sixties' crayon box; more importantly, he makes it seem to be a natural continuation of LaMontagne's 10-plus years of cosy vibes." "Supernova is unashamedly retro; a casual listener might dismiss it as mere nostalgia," Thom Jurek of AllMusic wrote. However, "Aborrowal is the product of a lifetime." Dave Simpson rated the album four stars out of five, saying, "There's nothing here that's really new," says the singer, but LaMontagne has created an unexpected summer soundtrack by assembling a collection of unexpected influences in one blissful location."
At The A.V. "Understandably bold, enterprising sequel to an artist whose entire career was based on adult-alternative autopilot," Chris Mincher said of the album.
