Randy Arozarena (born February 28, 1995) is a Cuban professional baseball outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Personal life

Arozarena has a daughter who was born in Mexico in 2018. His younger brother is soccer player Raiko Arozarena, who currently plays as a goalkeeper for Tampa Bay Rowdies who compete in the USL Championship. He has stated that he would like to become a Mexican citizen and represent Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

On November 23, 2020, Arozarena was arrested in Mexico’s Yucatan state after allegedly trying to kidnap his two year old daughter from her mother and assaulted the woman’s father. He was released two days later as the mother of the child did not press charges.

A film based on Arozarena's life is currently scheduled to be released between 2022 and 2023.

Career

Arozarena competed for Vegueros de Pinar del Ro of the Cuban National Series during the 2013–14 and 2014-15 seasons. He hit.291/.412/.419 with three home runs, 24 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases in his first season.

Arozarena played in Mexico, spent brief stints in the Mérida Winter League, Norte de México League, and with the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League before registering for the Mexican Pacific League's Mayos de Navojoa in the winter.

Arozarena was signed as an international free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals in July 2016. He made his minor league debut in 2017 and spent his first full season with both the Palm Beach Cardinals and the Springfield Cardinals, with 11 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 121 games between both teams. Following the season, he returned to the Mexican Pacific League to play for the Mayos de Navojoa in 64 games, where he slashed.292/.558/.558. The Mayos made it to the championship series for the first time this season. Though the team did not win the series, Arozarena had a game-winning hit in the bottom of game number six. Arozarena was a non-roster invitee to 2018 spring training. He joined the Memphis Redbirds in the spring and began the season. In July 2018, he was chosen to represent the Cardinals in the 2018 All-Star Futures Game. During the season, Arozarena spent time with Springfield. He helped them win the Pacific Coast League and was named co-MVP of the PCL playoffs alongside teammate Tommy Edman. He batted.274/.433, 49 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases in over 113 games between Memphis and Springfield. For the third time, Arozarena returned to play for Mayos de Navojoa in 2018, but she only appeared in 15 games.

Arozarena's spring training put him on the disabled list with Memphis due to a fractured hand. He returned to play for Springfield in May before being promoted to Memphis in June.

The Cardinals selected Arozarena's deal and promoted him to the major leagues on August 12, 2019. He made his major league debut against the Kansas City Royals on August 14. With one home run, two RBIs, and two stolen bases, St. Louis, Arozarena, had a total of 19 games.

Arozarena was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Matthew Liberatore, Edgardo Rodriguez, and the Rays' Competitive Balance Draft Pick on January 9, 2020. Arozarena batted.281 in seven home runs and 11 RBIs in more than 23 games for the 2020 season.

Arozarena scored two runs home runs against the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, defeating Evan Longoria for the most home runs by a rookie in the postseason. Arozarena was named the MVP of the ALCS for the first time in history, becoming the first rookie position player to win the award. He hit.321 with four home runs and six RBIs in the series. Arozarena scored in the third, fourth, and sixth games of the World Series, breaking the all-time record for most home runs in a single postseason. He tied for the most hits by a rookie in Game 3 and surpassed Derek Jeter for the most hits by a rookie in the postseason. In Game 5, he hit his 27th straight appearance in the postseason, defeating Pablo Sandoval for the most hits in a single postseason. Arozarena has attributed his playoff power to his wearing of his lucky cowboy boots, which he affections as his "power boots."

Arozarena batted.274/.356/.459 in 141 games for the 2021 season, with 20 home runs, 69 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. Arozarena became the first player in baseball history to run home run and take home in the same game during the playoffs in game one of the 2021 ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. Arozarena received the AL Rookie of the Year Award following the season's conclusion, becoming the first Ray to do so since Wil Myers in 2013.

Though he stole 32 bases (tied for third in the majors), he was also leading the major leagues in caught stealing with 12 in 2022; his batted.344/.463.
