Cody Bellinger Life

Cody James Bellinger (born July 13, 1995) is an American professional baseball first baseman and outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball. (MLB).

He was named All-Star and the National League's Rookie of the Year in 2017 and received the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2019.

Clay Bellinger, the son of Clay Bellinger, who also played in baseball, is the subject of this article.

Early life

Bellinger was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, on July 13, 1995, to Clay and Jennifer Bellinger. His mother works with Sotheby's International Realty, while his father was with the New York Yankees and Anaheim Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1999 to 2002, winning three World Series in that period. Clay Bellinger also coached the Chandler, Arizona National Little League team, for whom his son was a member of the 2007 Little League World Series (LLWS). Cody was only 11 years old at the time, one year younger than most of his LLWS teammates, but he helped clinch a berth in the Little League West Regional with a four-run batted effort. Chandler qualified to the LLWS in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, but teams from Lubbock, Texas, and Warner Robins, Georgia disqualified him in the semifinals.

Bellinger made a name for herself by playing for Hamilton High School in Chandler a few years ago. He was named team MVP both as a junior and a senior, and his senior season saw him hit.429. Despite the Yankees' invitation to Bellinger's pre-draft workout, most baseball teams were uninterested in using a high draft pick on Bellinger, who measured 6 foot (4 inches (1.93 kg), but who made only one home run that season.

Personal life

Cole, Bellinger's younger brother, is four years old. Cole, a standout pitcher for Hamilton High School, was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Cole spent two seasons in the Padres farm system before retiring from baseball in 2021. Bellinger has one child with girlfriend Chase Carter, a daughter who was born in November 2021.

In the video game Assassin's Creed Valhalla, a character based on Bellinger appears for the first time. During one story section, the player character must defeat Viking Otta Sluggasson, who wields a tree trunk like a baseball bat. Bellinger, a lifelong gamer, captured his movements using motion capture equipment, with his own baseball bat as his Sluggasson's weapon.

Cody Bellinger Career

Professional career

In the fourth round, 124th overall, of the 2013 MLB Draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Bellinger. He had decided to play college baseball for the Oregon Ducks at the time. Bellinger decided against Oregon in order to sign with the Dodgers for $700,000, or $300,000 more than was expected for a fourth-round draft pick. He was batting.210 in 162 at-bats, with one home run, 30 RBIs, and 25 runs scored during the season. He had some difficulties with plate discipline, knocking out 46 times in 47 games, but showed promise by taking 31 walks and recording 16 extra hits. He played in Rookie ball with the Ogden Raptors in 2004, batting.328 with 34 RBIs in 46 Pioneer League games.

Bellinger's first full year in the minor leagues was assigned to the Class A-Advanced Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. His prospects began to rise by June 11, when he was fifth in the California League with 12 home runs, and he was at least three years younger than every other top-five hitter. Despite that his.557 slugging percentage was disappointing, this was largely due to the Rancho Cucamonga Epicenter's design, which had a limiting number of home runs. Bellinger was also the designated hitter for the California League's postseason All-Star Team after making a return to the midseason for the California League's All-Star Game. He helped the Quakes win a Cal League championship title, including the game-winning home run, to complete their sweep of the San Jose Giants. Bellinger was named the California League Championship Series MVP for his efforts. He batted.264 for the Quakes, with 30 home runs, 103 RBIs, and 97 runs in 478 at bats.

Bellinger began the 2016 season with the Texas Drillers after a solid spring training effort in which he batted.393 in 18 games. Bellinger was unable to recover from the disabled list in May, missing the first half of the Double-A season with a strained hip, and batting.150 in his first 50 at-bats. His hunger was breaking out on May 16 with a walk-off grand slam against the Arkansas Travelers. He spent the majority of the season in Tulsa, batting.263 with 23 home runs and 65 RBIs in 114 games, but was promoted to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers on September 3, ahead of the Pacific Coast League playoffs. He appeared in only three games for Oklahoma City this season, totaling three home runs and six RBIs. Bellinger played for the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League for a month due to his injured hip. Bellinger was credited with three home runs, eight doubles, and 17 RBIs in 20 games with Glendale, and he was named a member of the AFL Top Prospects Team.

Bellinger and fellow Dodgers prospect Jose De Leon were invited to the MLB/MLBPA Rookie Career Development Program in Leesburg, Virginia, where top prospects from both teams spend four days learning about life in the major leagues. In the first 18 games of the year, he started his career with Oklahoma City, batting.343 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in his first 18 games.

Faced with a stumbling and injured outfield, Bellinger called Bellinger up on April 25, 2017, giving him the opportunity to start in left field and eighth position in the batting order for that night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Bellinger hit his first big league base that night with an infield ground ball to third base. He was also the third Dodger to walk in his MLB debut since 1913, after Chico Fernández in 1956 and Dick Nen in 1963. Bellinger scored the first and second home runs of his major league career against Zach Eflin in the seventh inning and then in the second of three consecutive home runs against closer Héctor Neris. In his first 11 major league games, the Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres and Bellinger to five home runs and 14 RBIs. His first grand slam came the following week on May 6, leading to the Dodgers' 10–2 win over the San Diego Padres and Bellinger. Bellinger tied Joc Pederson and James Loney for the most home runs by a Dodgers rookie in one month of the season, with his total of 11 home runs in 32 games, making him the fastest Dodgers rookie to reach that number.

Bellinger was able to set several team and MLB records in the month of June thanks to a series of multi-home run games. Bellinger set the fastest player in MLB history to play four multi-home run games in 45 contests on June 13, the previous record was set by Bob Horner in 1978 with 63 games. In 2004, he was the first Dodger to play in consecutive multi-home run games after Adrián Beltré, and the third Dodgers rookie to record at least four multi-home run games in a season. Bellinger topped Gary Sánchez and Wally Berger in the first inning of a losing match to the New York Mets on June 19, his 51st appearance in the league, tied for the first time in his career. He took an additional solo shot against Zack Wheeler in the ninth innings to become the fastest player to 21 home runs. Bellinger was the first rookie in MLB history to hit the ground in ten games in a span of ten games the following day. Bellinger won his sixth two-home run games of the season on June 25, beating Mike Piazza's team's record for most multi-home run games in one season and leading the NL with 24 total home runs. With his first appearances in both the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby, he capped off the season's first half. Bellinger won by Charlie Blackmon in two rounds before falling to Aaron Judge of the Yankees in the semifinals.

Bellinger made his first Dodgers rookie appearance on July 15, going 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs against the Miami Marlins. Bellinger's 35th home run of the year on September 2nd tied Mike Piazza's rookie record; the next day, Bellinger tied Piazza's record by knocking off Padres closer Brad Hand in ninth innings. Bellinger's 39th home run helped the Dodgers clinch the NL West championship over the San Francisco Giants on September 22, smashing Wally Berger and Frank Robinson's record for the most National League (NL) home runs made by a rookie. Bellinger's rookie MLB season saw him finish at 39 runs, 97 RBIs, and 87 runs scored in 480 at bats and 132 games.

Bellinger's first MLB postseason appearance against the Arizona Diamondbacks was his fifth home run in Game 3 in which he became the youngest Dodger to face a postseason home run in franchise history. In Game 4 of the 2017 National League Championship Series (NLCS), his next home run came against Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs; in doing so, he became the youngest player to homer in a Championship Series game since Miguel Cabrera did so in Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS). Bellinger did not produce many hits in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series, but he did not have three strikeouts in a single postseason run. Despite the Dodgers' loss to the Houston Astros in the World Series, Bellinger was the unanimous winner of the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Bellinger was unconcerned by the prospect of a sophomore slump, in which an athlete's results fellst during their second professional season, even as he entered the 2018 MLB season. He hit the Dodgers to a 9-0 win and put an end to Bellinger's opening 0-for-11 skid. He had his first home run of the season, with a two-run shot off Rich Hill of the Giants. Bellinger's home run was also the 40th of his career. He made the feat in 136 games, making him the third-quickest MLB player to reach 40 home runs. Bellinger was unable to carry his rookie energy into June, but there were concerns that Bellinger would be sent back to the minors when manager Dave Roberts benched him on June 3. Bellinger, on the other hand, used the bench to make a small change to his position in the batter's box, and he went on to have six hits in his next 13 at-bats, including home runs in four consecutive games. He appeared in all 162 regular-season games this year, batting.260 with 25 home runs and 76 RBIs in 557 at bats.

Bellinger led the Dodgers to win the NL West championship with a go-ahead two-run home run in a tiebreaker game against the Colorado Rockies on October 1. He began to sink in the four-game NLDS against the Atlanta Braves as the Dodgers entered the 2018 season. Although Bellinger did not hit often in the NLCS against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers were still alive thanks to his 10th-inning jumping catch in Game 4 on Game 4, when the Dodgers advanced to a walk-off victory. Bellinger was named the National League MVP for the 2018 season after completing the go-ahead home run in Game 7 that clinched the National League pennant for the Dodgers. Despite receiving his NLCS award, Bellinger appeared in just two games in the 2018 World Series, with manager Dave Roberts preferring to platoon almost every position. He successfully reached base only once in the five-game game series, on a single, and was later discovered stealing. In five games, the Dodgers lost the World Series to the Boston Red Sox, and Bellinger was suspended in the elimination game, giving Enrique Hernández the opportunity against left-handed Boston pitcher David Price.

Bellinger's 2019 season began on a hot streak, leading MLB in runs, hits, batting average, and slugging percentage by the end of April. Matt Kemp's 13th home run of the season came on April 27, putting him one of the most single-season home runs of any Dodger until the end of April. Bellinger's home run also lifted him to 88 total bases by the end of April, three more than Chase Utley's 2008 record and the most of any batter in the live-ball era. His 97 total bases, 37 RBIs, and 47 hits before May 1 were all MLB records, though his 32 runs scored and 14 home runs tied existing records. Bellinger received his first Player of the Month award for April 2019, despite a.431 appearance in 132 plate appearances.

Bellinger and Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers were the frontrunners for the NL MVP Award by the All-Star break. Bellinger led with 72 runs, 73 RBIs, a.331 average, and a.431 on-base percentage, while his 31 home runs,.687 slugging percentage, and 1.118 on-base plus slugging (OPS) were all marginally behind Yelich. Bellinger was also the best in baseball with 6.7 wins above replacement. Bellinger played in his second All-Star game nod and his first All-Star game in 2019, as he opened the game against Yelich and Ronald Acua Jr. of the Atlanta Braves in the NL outfield. He was also invited to the Home Run Derby that year, but canceled it in order to have a day off from baseball until the All-Star game.

Bellinger was banned from his first MLB game after arguing with home plate umpire Dan Iassogna over balls and strikes during a tumultuous Freeway Series game on July 24, causing him to be ejected. "I'm trying to get to base as best I can, but it's impossible to do that." Bellinger defended his decision by saying, "I'm trying to do the best I can, and it's impossible to hit like that." Bellinger scored his 100th home run off Eric Lauer of the San Diego Padres on August 2 in his 100th game; he did so in only his 401st game, beating Mike Piazza's Dodgers record of 422 games to 100 home runs. Bellinger became both the first MLB player of the 2019 season and the youngest Dodger in franchise history to record his 40th home run of the year. Bellinger's production began to decline after the All-Star break, with a.906 OPS and only 13 home runs in the first 51 games of the year. Parts of this were due to discussions with Dodgers workers about avoiding the MVP race in favour of staying calm and building to the postseason. In addition, pitchers began avoiding throwing strikes to Bellinger where possible; the pitcher had 86 walks by September 5, a league-leading 19 of which were intentional. The Washington Nationals bullpen capitalized on areas where Bellinger was considerably weaker: he avoided tossing middle-of-the-road fastballs in favour of low and far pitches that would cause Bellinger to swing and miss, foul out, or walk away during the NLDS.

Bellinger set a new record in batting average (.305), home runs (47), and RBIs (115). He also received a trio of MLB awards, including the NL Gold Glove Award and the NL Silver Slugger Award. He was the first Dodger in club history to win all three awards in the same season. He has also been given two Fielding Bible Awards for his work in right field, center field, and first base. With these awards, he was the first Dodgers outfielder to win any Fielding Bible Award and the first MLB player to pick up two in the same season. Bellinger concluded the 2019 awards season with a pick from the inaugural All-MLB First Team, which includes Yelich and Mike Trout in the outfield.

Bellinger signed a $11.5 million deal with the Dodgers for the 2020 season, beating Kris Bryant's record for the largest single-season contract for a player in his first year eligible for arbitration. Bellinger went back to Arizona and concentrated on tweaking his swing in a "stress-free environment" after MLB announced the indefinite suspension of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bellinger got off to a slow start in his first eight games as the pandemic season came to an end. Bellinger had poor communication with pitches in recent years, resulting in a large number of groundouts. Bellinger's numbers dropped dramatically from the previous year: in 56 games of the shortened season, he dropped by.239, with a.789 OPS and just 12 home runs. Many of MLB's top hitters had a rough season in the 2020 season, including Bellinger. Bellinger's decline in batting average and slugging percentage, the latter of which dropped from.670 in 2019 to.354 in 2020, was attributed to his regular experimentation with his swing, which prevented him from locking into pitches the way he had the season before. Bellinger was once more a finalist for a Gold Glove Award in the outfield, but the San Diego Padres' Trent Grisham received the honor.

The Dodgers were the first team to secure a playoff spot in the 2020 season, putting together a commanding lead over the NL West by September 16. They finished at the top of their division and then went on to sweep the Brewers at the 2020 National League Wild Card Series. In Game 2 of the 2020 NLDS, the Dodgers faced the Padres, where Bellinger's defensive play allowed Los Angeles to hang onto their 4–3 lead and steal the game. Bellinger made a catching run to rob Fernando Tatis Jr. of a two-run home run in the seventh inning, with Grisham on second base. The Dodgers lost 3-1 in four games in their first four games, but the Dodgers were able to bounce back and push the series to seven games. In that last game, Bellinger scored the go-ahead home run, securing the Dodgers' position in the 2020 World Series. The Dodgers first World Series championship and the Dodgers' first since 1988, respectively, defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. Despite hurting his shoulder during the NLCS, Bellinger continued to participate in the World Series, and he expressed his appreciation for his Game 1 teammates rather than high-fiving them. Bellinger signed a one-year, $16.1 million deal with the Dodgers in the 2021 season.

Bellinger, a right shoulder athlete who had played for ground balls for a long time, underwent surgery in November 2020 to repair the affected arm. He revealed later that he had dislocated his shoulder while celebrating his NLCS-winning home run in October by collaborating too closely with teammate Enrique Hernández' arm. Bellinger's recovery from the arthroscopic glenoid labrum surgery progressed, and he was able to join the Dodgers in spring 2021. After colliding with Oakland Athletics pitcher Reymin Guduan on April 6, he sustained another serious injury. Bellinger was initially inserted on the 10-day injured list before medical scans revealed that he had suffered a hairline fracture in his left fibula. Bellinger was on-base for the sixth time on May 29, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in an 11–6 loss to the Giants, but a sixth-inning walk enabled him to stretch his on-base streak to 20 games.

Bellinger's return from injury was highlighted by his career-worst offensive effort. He struck out 14 times in his first 11 games, but only one extra-base hit was recorded. Bellinger's defense improved in center field by July 23, but he was under.200 both at home and on the road. Bellinger's batting improved as he continued to exercise the affected areas in August, and he admitted in August that his poor batting was due to lingering pain and weakness from both the shoulder and leg injuries. Roberts made the decision to relegate Bellinger to a platoon role in the outfield, beginning with A. J. Pollock, Mookie Betts, or Chris Taylor against left-handed pitchers. However, injuries to Pollock and Taylor compelled the Dodgers to abandon the platoon system shortly after its installation. Bellinger sustained his third major injury of the season in September after collapsing with teammate Gavin Lux resulted in a fractured rib. Bellinger had already missed 46 games this season due to his fractured fibula, as well as seven more with hamstring tightness. Bellinger posted a career-low.165 in 315 at bats, with ten home runs and 36 RBIs.

He reached base three times and stole twice in the wild card game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Bellinger's two-RBI double scored the go-ahead runs for the ultimate 9–2 victory over San Francisco in Game 2 of the NLDS match against division rivals the San Francisco Giants. Bellinger's game-winning RBI single in Game 5 of the NLDS not only allowed the Dodgers to beat the Giants and advance to the NLCS, but it also helped him tie Manny Ramirez and Gene Tenace's record of three consecutive go-ahead hits in winner-take-all tournaments. The Dodgers were down 5–2 against the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the NLCS when Bellinger struck a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Dodgers beat the Dodgers 6-5 after Bellinger tied the game and cleared the bases. Chris Taylor stole a single base and cleared the bases, followed by an RBI double from Mookie Betts helped the Dodgers win the game 6–5. Luke Jackson's home run pitch, a 96 mph (154 km/h) fastball, cleared the plate at 4.12 feet (1.26 m), making it difficult to hit. It was Bellinger's first home run of the season that had been outside the strike zone. After the game, Dave Roberts told reporters, "it's just impossible to imagine a bigger win." Bellinger, who lost to the Braves in six games, had 12 hits and seven RBIs in 34 postseason at bats.

Bellinger signed a $17 million contract with the Dodgers on December 23, avoiding wage arbitration.

Bellinger had the lowest on base percentage in the majors in 2022, batting.210/.265 (the lowest OBP in the NL of all qualified batters)/.389 with 19 home runs and 68 RBIs. In 504 at bats, he struck out 150 times.

After each of the first two years, opt-outs have been included in the contract. Bellinger, 28, will make $30 million in each of his first two seasons and $20 million in his final year if he sticks around for three years. Bellinger left LA in 2022. Previously, it had been reported that Scott Boras, the player's representative, had been lobbying for a "package worth more than $200 million," but MLB executives were reluctant to deal with such demands for a player with ongoing injury problems in recent years.

Masataka Yoshida of the Red Sox won by two runs on his eighth inning rally in 12-5 victory

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 24, 2023
After playing for years in Japan, Masataka Yoshida has already made some mechanical improvements at the plate during his rookie season with the Boston Red Sox. They certainly paid the bill on Sunday. Boston roared to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-5 after Yoshida homered twice during Boston's nine-run outburst in the eighth inning. Since Hall of Fame slugger David Ortiz's debut in August 2008, he became the first Red Sox player to go deep in a single inning.
