Early life and career
Rajiv Gandhi was born in Bombay on August 20th, 1944, to Indira and Feroze Gandhi. Rajiv and Sanjay were accepted to Shiv Niketan Academy, where the teachers said Rajiv was shy and introverted, and "loved drawing and drawing."
In 1954, he was admitted to the Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, where Sanjay joined him two years later. Rajiv was sent to London in 1961 to study A-levels. Rajiv was also educated at École D'Humanité, a Swiss international boarding school. He studied engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1962 to 1965, but didn't get a degree. He started a course in mechanical engineering at Imperial College London in 1966 but didn't finish it. Gandhi was not studious enough, as he later revealed.
Gandhi was a friend of Amitabh Bachchan long before he became an actor or joined the Hindi cinema industry. When Bachchan was a student at Delhi University and a resident of New Delhi, Rajiv, Sanjay, and Bachchan used to spend time together. Bachchan began working to help his friend, Gandhi, in the 1980s.
Gandhi returned to India in 1966, the year his mother became Prime Minister. He went to Delhi and became a member of the Flying Club, where he was trained as a pilot. He was employed by Indian Airlines as a pilot in 1970; unlike Sanjay, he had no intention of joining politics. Edvige Antonia Albino, who changed her name to Sonia Gandhi and made India her home, married him in 1968, after three years of courtship. Rahul Gandhi, the couple's first child, was born in 1970. Priyanka Gandhi, the couple's daughter who married Robert Vadra, was born in 1972.
