Early life
Bajaj was born on June 10, 1938, to Kamalnayan Bajaj and Savitri Bajaj. Jamnalal Bajaj, an Indian independence fighter who was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, was the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Bajaj was alumnus of Harvard Business School, St. Stephen's College, Delhi, Government Law College, Mumbai, and John Connon School.

Bajaj died of pneumonia on February 20, 2022, at the age of 83. He had been admitted to the Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune earlier and was undergoing medical attention at the hospital. Prior to his death, he had also had cancer and heart disease.
Career
In 1965, Bajaj took over the Bajaj Group. He grew Bajaj Auto's turnover from 7.5 percent to 12,000 crore in a five-decade career, with the company's scooter Bajaj Chetak being the chief growth catalyst.
Bajaj resigned from his position in 2005, but his son Rajiv assumed the company's managing director. In 2008, Bajaj Auto was divided into three companies: Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Finserv, and a holding company. In March 2019, he resigned as chairman and non-executive director of Bajaj Finserv to become chairman emeritus. Bajaj resigned as non-executive chairman of Bajaj Auto in April 2021, ceding the position to his cousin, Niraj Bajaj, and keeping the company as chairman emeritus.
Bajaj was elected to the Rajya Sabha, India's Upper House of Parliament, filling the position that was vacant by Pramod Mahajan's death in the 2006-2010 period.
Bajaj was elected as the president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) twice, 1979–1980 and 2000, respectively. Pranab Mukherjee, the then President of India, presented him with the CII President's Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2017.
