Early life
Raghu Ram and his twin brother were born in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, together. His father is a chartered accountant, and his mother is a journalist. Supriya Nistala, Ram's younger sister, is also a member of Supriya Nistala.
He was a freshman at Deshbandhu College in the first year, but he joined Sri Venkateswara College in the second year. He attended Osmania University in Hyderabad, where he completed his education in the final year.

Career
Raghu Ram began his career with MTV Love Line, including VJs Malaika Arora and Cyrus Broacha, and he also spearheaded MTV Select and the first few seasons of MTV Super Select with VJ Nikhil Chinapa.
In 2004, Ram appeared on the first season of the reality television show Indian Idol as a contestant with judges Anu Malik, Farah Khan, and Sonu Nigam. He was turned down for ineffective singing skills and signature attitude traits. He later revealed in his autobiography that picking a fight with the judges was actually a prank he played on the advice of one of his subordinates and his wife who were serving as moderators.
In 2000, MTV accepted his idea of MTV Roadies as an experiment. The show was tentatively titled MTV: Find The Road, and senior producers of the channel were initially dismissive of it. From its second season onwards, it began to gain a following on Indian television and became India's longest running reality show. Ram was later appointed senior supervising producer of MTV India and the executive producer of Roadies, as well as MTV Splitsvilla, another reality show that he had started in 2008.
