Early life and career
Tolan was born in Scituate, Massachusetts, where he was a perennial favorite in the high school's dramatic performances. Tolan founded YPST, the Young People's Summer Theatre, before deciding to pursue a career in Hollywood. The company appeared in Broadway musicals and rehearsed at a local church. The organization grew so popular within three years that a second production had to be added to accommodate the ever-increasing population.
For four years, Tolan attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst before deciding to pursue theater specifically. From college to Minneapolis' Brave New Workshop (founded by improv veteran Dudley Riggs) at the suggestion of UMass employee Jim MacRostie, who had worked at the Twin Cities institution in the early years. Riggs gave Tolan a voice over the phone, but when Tolan arrived in Minneapolis a few months later, he discovered that the job was janitor at the theater.
Tolan became the musical director for the theater's touring company within a year, and after that, he moved to appear as a member of the main stage cast. Tolan and his fellow writer-performer Linda Wallem formed a double act called Wallem & Tolan in New York City in the 1980s and began performing on the cabaret circuit in New York City, where he and his partner, Don't Tell Mama, Eighty-Eights, and Broadway Baby were among the first acts to perform on Broadway City. Wallem and Tolan were known for their sketch drawings as well as for their musical pieces (written by Tolan) that became the act's mainstay. The show was mounted Off-Broadway at St. Peter's Church in 1989, following an extended run at the Manhattan Punch Line Theater. The show was produced by Sanford Fisher and Zev Guber and directed by Broadway veteran Martin Charnin under the heading Laughing Matters. The Burns Mantle Theater Yearbook 1988-1989 Best Plays named Tolan Outstanding Lyricist of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Show for his appearance in the production.
