Joe Keenan (born July 14, 1958) is an American screenwriter, television producer, and novelist.

Early life

Keenan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to an Irish Catholic family. He has a twin brother, John, and two other siblings, Ronald and Geraldine. He grew up in Cambridgeport's blue collar neighborhood. Keenan attended Boston College High School and Columbia College.

Personal life

Keenan lives in Los Angeles but does not drive a car. Gerry Bernardi, his partner, has been with him since 1982.

Early career

After reading Keenan's book Blue Heaven, Cheers creators James Burrows and Glen and Les Charles invited Keenan to create a new sitcom for their production company in 1991. Gloria Vane, the resulting pilot starring JoBeth Williams, was not picked up by a network, but it did result in a writing post on Frasier. The American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded The Times, his first play tracing a seventeen-year marriage between Liz, an actor, and Ted, a writer, the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater. The lyrics for The Times in 1993 were rewarded with the Edward Kleban Award.
