Peter Thorne Career

Career

Thorne was born in Urmston, Lancashire, and began his career with Blackburn Rovers. Mark Atkins was on his first team appearance at Wembley Stadium in 1994 as he returned to face Manchester United in the 64th minute of the 2–0 loss. After a brief stint at Wigan Athletic, he signed for Swindon Town during the 1994–95 season, helping them reach the Football League Cup semi-finals, but not being able to prevent relegation to the Second Division. However, his goals helped them win promotion back to First Division in their first attempt and maintain them in the 1996–97 season.

Thorne joined Stoke City in July 1997 after boss Chic Bates paid £500,000 for his services. He was signed as a replacement for Mike Sheron, who joined Queens Park Rangers. In 1997–98, he led the team's top-scoring with 16 goals, but it was unable to prevent Stoke from being relegated to the Second Division. In 1998–99, he had troubled for form, scoring 11 goals before becoming a regular goalcorer in 1999–2000. Stoke defeated Gillingham in the play-offs after scoring 30 goals. Thorne scored four goals against Chesterfield on March 4, 2000, becoming the first Stoke player to score four goals in a single match since John Ritchie in 1966. In the 2000 Football League Trophy Final, he also scored the winning goal. Thorne defeated Walsall in the play-offs again in 2000–01, scoring 19 goals. Thorne debuted four goals in five games before moving to Cardiff City to join Graham Kavanagh. Thorne had scored 80 goals for Stoke in 189 appearances.

He was signed by Cardiff City in September 2001 for a club-record £1.7 million. His first season with the club was cut due to injury, but he still managed to finish the year with a total of 8 goals. As he helped the club win promotion via the play-offs, he enjoyed a full season and worked with the club's talisman striker Robert Earnshaw. Thorne scored against Bristol City in the first leg of the play-off semi-finals on the season, reaching the net 16 times during the season.

Thorne was a key part of the team the previous year and had scored 13 times when he broke a bone in his foot, meaning he missed the first three months of the season. Injuries would have limited his time with the club, and the Canaries would have to pay a total of £200,000 if they made it to the Premiership within two years of the transfer, though Thorne was the club's highest paid player at the time.

At Norwich, Thorne's future prospects were slim. He missed the start of the 2005–06 season due to injuries and then struggled to establish himself as a first team regular, scoring just one goal during the season. Norwich manager Nigel Worthington said in the summer of 2006 that Thorne will be allowed to leave the club if a good one was received. He stayed on Norwich's books for the 2006-07 season, but was released at the end of the season. He considered retirement, but Bradford City's recently promoted League Two team Bradford City signed him to a one-year deal. In the League Cup, he scored twice for Norwich, as well as strikes against Watford in the league and Rotherham United.

The striker was forced to miss the start of the season due to a hip injury, but he made his debut in a 2–1 victory over Lincoln City at Sincil Bank on September 7, 2007 where he had a goal disallowed. He scored his first goal for Bradford in a 1–0 FA Cup victory over Chester City on November 10, 2007, before scoring his first league goal a week later at Dagenham & Redbridge. He scored all three goals in Bradford's 3–0 victory over Notts County on January 12, 2008, scoring his first league hat-trick in two years. Thorne was trained for City's game against Rotherham United on March 22, 2008, before scoring his 150th league goal of his career two days later when City defeated Chesterfield 1–0. Thorne was signed by the city as a youth, but Thorne's contract was extended through to the 2008-2009 season.

Thorne began the 2008–09 season by scoring two goals in each of their first two league games as City defeated Notts County and Macclesfield Town. With a 2–0 victory over Rochdale, he earned his fifth game in the first three games to help City keep an undefeated start to the season. Bradford lost by one goal in their fourth game to Aldershot Town by a single point, but he made amends by scoring another three goals in the next two games. Despite losing the Player of the Month award in September, he was rewarded with the PFA's monthly prize. Thorne led the division's goalscoring charts and had scored 11 points by the start of November, but his form fell off and he was also plagued by a shoulder injury. He waited four months for his next goal, which came as a late consolation against Notts County at the end of February, before scoring two more goals over the weekend in a 5–0 loss of Aldershot Town. He had 17 goals in the season's final season. In June 2009, he signed a new one-year deal with Bradford, but he was drafted as team captain ahead of the 2009–10 season, but he was forced to miss the team until January 2010, after scoring for the reserves. In March 2010, he was released from his deal by new boss Peter Taylor after he failed to score in his third season with City. Thorne also decided not to play.
