Rowsthorn performed as part of the comedy and singing duo The Cactus Brothers in 1983 while studying for his degree.

On The Comedy Company (1989), he first came to fame as a stand-up comedian and as a writer and performer. Rowsthorn appeared in The Gift (1996), was a lead in the Australian children's television show The Gift (1997), appeared in Bad Eggs and Take Away (both 2003) and played a dashing hairdresser named 'Miss Kafka' in the Sigrid Thornton film Little Oberon (2005).

He is perhaps best known for his television work, especially as Brett Craig in the hit series Kath & Kim (2002–2007) and 2012 film, Kath & Kimderella. Warren Cronkshonk in a hospital spoof Let the Blood Run Free (1990–1992). Rowsthorn appeared on ABC TV from 2006 to 2011.

Rowsthorn was unveiled as a celebrity contestant on the fourth season of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! Rowsthorn was evicted after 40 days in the jungle, ending in 6th place on March 7, 2018.

A drag parody show, based on the iconic Australian sit-com Kath & Kim has been hit with death threats from online trolls. Fountain Lakes In Lockdown: A Drag Parody Play is currently touring Australia's east coast and writer and performer Thomas Jaspers has revealed that the production was forced to involve police following threatening comments online. Thomas said the virtual hate had been coming from 'far-right snowflakes.'
