Peter Chelsom (born 20 April 1956) is a British film producer, writer, and actor.

He has produced Hector and the Hunt for Love, Serendipity, and Shall We Dance. Peter Chelsom is a member of the British Academy, the American Academy, The Writer Guild of America, and The Writers Guild of America.

Early life

Chelsom was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, and the son of antiques shop owners Kay and Reginald Chelsom. He attended Wrekin College (1969-1973) and later studied at the Central School of Drama in London. He has dual citizenship in the United States and the United Kingdom, and he is an Honorary Citizen of the tiny town Fivizzano in Tuscany.

Career

Chelsom appeared in The Royal Shakespeare Company, opposite Patrick Stewart, the Royal National Theatre, alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins, and the Royal Court Theatre in London before the age of 30. During that time, he appeared in several film and television shows, including A Woman of Substance in 1985, which also included Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr.

Chelsom began to write and direct while acting. Treacle's directorial debut received a BAFTA nomination and invites to festivals around the world.

He taught at both the Actors' Institute and Cornell University from 1985 to 1998.

Hear My Song, 1991 romance, was his first full length film. Josef Locke, the Irish tenor who appeared in Ned Beatty's film, was inspired by the film. Chelsom Best Newcomer was praised by the Evening Standard British Film Awards for his contribution to the film. "The very essence of a great small film," Roger Ebert said of it.

Funny Bones (1995), Chelsom's second feature film, is a film about comedies. Oliver Platt, Jerry Lewis, Leslie Caron, Freddie Davies, and Lee Evans tells the tale of two half brothers, one American and the other British, who will not stop at nothing to get a laugh... even murder. At the Evening Standard British Film Awards, Funny Bones won Best Picture at five European film festivals and the "Peter Sellers Award for Comedian" at five European film festivals, as well as the "Peter Sellers Award for Comedians.

The Mighty (1998), his third film based on the best-selling book Freak the Mighty. Sharon Stone, Gillian Anderson, Gena Rowlands, and Harry Dean Stanton appear in the film. Two Golden Globe Nominations were given. Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Garry Shandling appeared in this film, which was later seen in Town and Country in 2001. Serendipity, along with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, made $50 million in the same year.

Shall We Dance, his next film in 2004 was a remake of the 1996 film Shall We Dance. Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci appeared in the American version. The film grossed $170 million worldwide.

Hannah Montana: The Movie for Disney was directed by Chelsom in 2009. When it first opened in the United States, the film debuted on its first weekend in the United States, earning a figure of $32 million.

Chelsom produced Hector and the Search for Happiness in 2014, starring Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Stellan Skarsgard, and Jean Reno. In a special screening at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, the film made its US premiere. It tells the tale of a disillusioned psychiatrist who travelled the world looking at what makes people smile. This film was named Chelsom Best Director by the Monte Carlo Film Festival.

Chelsom produced The Space Between Us, a science fiction film starring Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, and Carla Gugino.
