Wentz was mainly involved in the Chicago hardcore punk scene and appeared in several bands in the late 1990s. In 1993, he formed First Born, his first band. He was an infrequent bass player for Racetraitor by the mid-1990s.
Wentz, along with Adam Bishop of XshroudX and Extinction; Daniel Binaei of Racetraitor; and Timothy Miller formed the metalcore band Novena (later renamed to Arma Angelus). The band cycled through six bassists before recruiting Tim McIlrath, who had just graduated from Baxter. In 2000, they released their debut EP, Grave End of the Shovel. Binaei's partial relocation of California resulted in the recruitment of Jay Jancetic of Extinction around the time. McIlrath left the band in 2000 in order to concentrate on Transistor Revolt and The Killing Tree, resulting in the recruitment of Christopher Gutierrez, a XshroudX and Restraint member. Where Sleeplessness Is Rest From Nightmares was released in 2001. Throwdown and Hatebreed also performed at Hellfest on behalf of the album. After Gutierrez's departure, bassist Joe Trohman was hired on tour, but Trohman's severe stage fright led to the band's return to mid-tour and residing Trohman selling merchandise.
Wentz appeared in Birthright, Extinction, and Yellow Road Priest at the same time. After Trohman introduced Wentz to a musical acquaintance, Patrick Stump, Arma Angelus' bassist, Joe Trohman formed the pop-punk band Fall Out Boy. Andy Hurley promised to drum part-time, but the band only joined the band full time later. Arma Angelus, the last of its kind, appeared in 2002.
Fall Out Boy, a Fall Out Boy EP, was released in 2002. The band dropped their mini-LP Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girlfriend on Uprising Records just shy of 2003. Following the band's third, hit full-album release From Under the Cork Tree on the major label Island Records, this album will be remastered and reissued later. The band's debut album on the RIAA has since been named double platinum, as well as "Sugar, We're Goin Down."
In 2007, Fall Out Boy's fourth album, Infinity on High, was released to major success, debuting at No. Among No. 3's. With 260,000 sales, led by lead single "This Ain't a Scene, It's a Arms Race," which made the top ten in the United States and UK and top the charts in New Zealand, leading the Billboard 200. More than 2 million units were sold in the United States as a result of "Thnks fr th Mmrs." Folie à Deux, the band's fifth studio album, was released on December 13, 2008, and debuted at No. The Billboard 200 is 8 on the Billboard 200. The band toured extensively in support of their albums.
The four band members announced in November 2009 that they would go on an indefinite hiatus, indicating that they were uncertain of the band's fate. Wentz has said that his personal motivation for taking a break is because he feels that his name and marriage to pop singer Ashlee Simpson had been a hindrance to the band. "I think the world needs a little less Pete Wentz," he said.
Fall Out Boy, as well as an album and single with which all four members contributed, announced their return on February 4, 2013. Wentz had the majority of song writing duties once more. Save Rock and Roll, the band's lead single, My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up), and tour dates. Wentz, along with guitarist Bebe Rexha, guitarist Nate Patterson, and drummer Spencer Peterson, formed the ska/electropop band Black Cards in July 2010. The band had intended to debut a full-length album in the summer of 2011. However, following several delays, the departures of both Patterson and Rexha, as well as general confusion about the band's future, the band reshuffled, resembling plans to release a mixtape, write new material, and continue to remix remix tracks by other artists.
Wentz has admitted that during the time he took off to spend with his family, he was inspired by Jamaican reggae songs like Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" and The Gladiators' "Warriors." Wentz then contacted producer Sam Hollander (Gym Class Heroes, Cobra Starship, Hey Monday) and discussed the possibility with him of mash up ska, dance, and reggae with 80s British rock and pop to create a new experimental sound.
Bebe Rexha, the group's vocalist, had been banned from the band for the foreseeable future, according to the band's Facebook announcement on January 12, 2012.
