Early life
Ham was born in Swansea, Wales. Around 1961, he founded The Panthers, a local rock band. Until it became The Iveys in 1965, the organization would undergo several name and line-up changes. Bill Collins, the band's manager, moved the band to London in 1966, and they continued to tour for three years throughout the United Kingdom. After Collins' encouragement of a Revox tape recorder, Ham became the band's most popular songwriter. The Kinks' Ray Davies was the first to be interested in the company, but Davies' tracks did not appear commercially until decades later. The Iveys caught the attention of Mal Evans (The Beatles' personal assistant) in 1968 and were eventually signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label after being impressed by the band's songwriting abilities.
