Pedro Mba Obiang Avomo (born 27 March 1992) is a Spanish-born Equatoguinean professional footballer who plays for Italian club Sassuolo and the Equatorial Guinea national team.

He played for Sampdoria before moving to London and the Premier League in 2015.

Obiang has competed for Spain under the age of 17, 19, under-19, and under-21 years before transferring to represent the Equatorial Guinea national football team.

Club career

Obiang, a native of Alcala, began his football career with several clubs from his hometown, such as CD Avance, RSD Alcalá, and AD Naya, where he excelled. He was sent by these performances to Atlético Madrid's Cadete team. At age 16, he left Atlético for Sampdoria in 2008, the minimum age for international transfer within the European Union is 16. He was a member of Allievi Nazionali's youth team from 2008–09, but he was also a call-up to the first team in pre-season. By the decision of head coach Walter Mazzarri, he was also an unused substitute against Lazio and against Chievo. He was promoted to the senior youth team of Primavera from 2009-2010.

Obiang, the primary a youth team player, played seven times in pre-season friendlies in summer 2010, scoring two goals. After the Genoese team's injury crisis in which the team lost midfielders Stefano Guberti, Fernando Tissone, Andrea Poli, and Paolo Sammarco, the team's new head coach Domenico Di Carlo received a call-up and made his competitive debut on September 12, 2010. In the 58th minute, he substituted Vladimir Koman, who was playing 2–1 to Juventus; eventually, Sampdoria draws 3–3 at Stadio Olimpico di Torino. On the morning, Obiang signed a new, five-year contract extension with Doria, just days before the match began.

Obiang was also selected in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League 25-Men senior squad (list A) for the play-off round and was given the call-up against Werder Bremen, but Obiang was not included as one of the substitutes' bench. On August 28, 2010 as a list B player (Under-21 youth product), he received his first call-up for 2010-11 UEFA Europa League. On December 16, 2010, he made his European debut (matchday 6), with the club still eliminated before the match, losing 0–2 to Debreceni.

West Ham United reported the signing of Obiang for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal on June 10, 2015. In a 1–2 home loss to Leicester City on August 15, he made his Premier League debut as a half-time replacement for Reece Oxford. Obiang was named Player of the Month for October in November 2016.

Obiang scored his first Premier League goal against Southampton on February 4th, his 55th appearance for the club. Obiang came from a corner, where he was in control, and then shot the bottom corner from 25 yards out, landing the ball from 25 yards out. He was ruled out for the remainder of the 2016–17 season after rolled his ankle against Leicester on March 20, 2017. Obiang was hospitalized in January 2018 after an FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic. In February, he underwent knee surgery and was barred from the remainder of the 2017–18 season.

Obiang received the 2017-18 West Ham goal of the season award for his thunderbolt strike against Tottenham Hotspur.

Obiang left Sassuolo on July 24, 2019. In August 2021, he was diagnosed with bronchopulmonary disease and was banned from all sports participation as a precaution.

International career

At youth level, Obiang has been barred from Spain's participation in sport. In April 2011, Obiang was summoned to the Porto International Tournament.

The Gabonese Football Federation tried unsuccessfully to convince Obiang to play for Gabon, although both his parents and grandparents are from Equatorial Guinea. They included him in a squad list for a match between the country's under-20 and China in November 2011, but he turned down the invitation.

In 2011, when Equatorial Guinea was eligible to represent the country in the 2011 Africa Cup of Nations, Obiang approached Obiang to enquire, but Obiang declined. Obiang's position on representing Equatorial Guinea after a meeting with the Equatoguinean Football Federation people in April 2015 seemed to have changed after demonstrating a desire to play for the country. Obiang and Equatoguinean National Team head coach and coordinator Esteban Becker, as well as Equatoguinean National Team head coach and coordinator Esteban Becker and Juvenal Edjogo-Owono, reached an agreement on October 5th in London.

Obiang was first called up for the Equatorial Guinea national team on November 7, 2018. In a 1–0 loss to Senegal on Sunday, Obiang made his debut for Equatorial Guinea. He said he was "proud" to play for the United States in December 2018. In a 4–1 African Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Sudan on March 22, he scored his first international goal.
