Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, a Cuban novelist who was born 27 January 1950 in Matanzas, is a Cuban novelist. When he was 11 years old, he grew up in Pinar del Ro and began selling ice cream and newspapers.

He served as a soldier, swimming and kayak instructor, agricultural scientist, educator in manufacturing, audio engineer, and writer for 26 years.

He is a painter and sculptor, as well as a writer of several poetry books. He arrived in central Havana at 37 years old and was stunned by the brutality but also the vigor of the people who lived there. He is the author of Dirty Havana Trilogy, King of Havana, Tropical Animal (winner of Italy's Narrativa Sur la Moos Prize in 2000), Snake's Nest (winner of the Prix des Amériques Insulaires et de la Guyane in 2008), Our GG in Havana, and the short stories of Melancholy of Lions.

Dirty Havana Trilogy, Tropical Animal, and The Insatiable Spiderman have all been translated.

He has published ten prose books and five books of poetry since 1994.

In 2007, he published Corazón Mestizo, a Cuban travel book.
