Smith opened Paul Smith Vêtements Pour Homme in Nottingham in 1970, which sold established clothing brands as well as pieces that Smith had created. The store was just 3 square meters and was located at 6 Byard Lane in Nottingham.

Smith presented his first men's collection, which featured a mix of casual and semi-formal wear, in 1976. Since then, the Paul Smith brand continued to expand, and he opened his flagship London store on Floral Street in Covent Garden, London, in 1979.

Paul Smith Women's first womenswear collection was launched in 1993 after reports that women were forced to buy smaller sizes to wear themselves.'

In 1984, the first Japan store opened in Tokyo and has since expanded to 165 stores around the country.

In 1987, Smith opened his first store in New York on Fifth Avenue. The company now has four stores throughout the state, including the flagship on Greene Street, as well as Williamsburg, Bleecker Street, and Brookfield Place.
