Life and career
Patty Larkin was born in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, and grew up in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, musical and artistic family. She inherited from a long line of Irish-American singers and storytellers, and her mother and her siblings were both musicians. She learned early in life how to appreciate the beauty and magic of the arts. She began classical piano lessons at age 7 and became immersed in the sounds of pop and folk in the 1960s, teaching herself the guitar and trying with songwriting in high school. Larkin, an English major, performed in coffeehouses in Oregon and San Francisco throughout her high school and college careers, beginning in espressohouses. She moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to study jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music and with Boston jazz guitarists after graduating from the University of Oregon.
She began her recording career with Philo/Rounder Records, where she released Step into the Light, I'm Fine, and Live in the Square on 1985. Tango, Angels Running, Strangers World, and Perpetible Fruit were among Windham Hill's latest High Street labels that she introduced in 1990: Tango, Angels Running, Strangers World, and Perpetrable Fruit. Following Windham Hill's transfer to BMG, Larkin signed to Vanguard Records and released a gogo, Regrooving The Dream, Red=Luck, and Watch The Sky. The former was a "critic call" in the New York Times. With 25 guests on 30 days, Larkin celebrated her 25th year of recording with a stripped down retrospective of 25 love songs (Road Narrows Records/Signature Sounds).
La Guitara, a collection of international women guitarists who debunk the belief that there are no outstanding female guitarists, was released by Larkin. She has appeared on numerous compilations and her songs have appeared in the following films: "Anyway the Main Thing Is" in Evolution (DreamWorks); "Good Thing" in Random Hearts (Columbia Pictures); and "Coming Up For Air" and "Reality On the Block" in Sliding Doors (Miramax). On her album "It's a Man's World," Cher sang "Angels Running."
Larkin is the recipient of an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music. "Patty Larkin Appreciation Day" has also been given by Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino for her lifetime in music and philanthropic service.
