Patricia Riggen Career

Early life and career beginnings

Riggen was born in Guadala, Jalisco. She gained experience in journalism and writing for documentaries while living in her home country. Riggen obtained a degree in Communication Sciences from ITESO (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente), Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara). "Female Directors" was her thesis research, which enabled her to talk with the four top female film directors in Mexico at the time. Riggen worked for journalist Bertha Navarro, worked for writer Bertha Navarro, and did extensive research on the death industry for a Guillaremeo Del Toro documentary. Riggen decided she wanted to go back to school in the late 1990s, when serving as Production Vice President of the Mexican Film Institute's short films section.

She migrated to New York City, where she earned her master's degree in scripting and screenwriting at Columbia University. "I had to write and direct all my exercises, and English is not my first language," Riggen said, "I started writing all these little films that had no dialogue." While attending Columbia, the actress produced two short films The Cornfield (2002) and Family Portrait (2004), a documentary about two children, received a number of film festival awards. Family Portrait was chosen by the Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking.

Riggen discovered writing and filmmaking, but she never imagined she'd be directing a film.

Riggen left New York to pursue a career in writing after being dissatisfied with producing. After directing one exercise, she discovered herself as a producer.

Directing career

Riggen's first big film, starring Kate Del Castillo and America Ferrera, was released on September 12, 2007. Riggen co-developed Under the Same Moon with writer and producer Ligiah Villabobos. Riggen and Villabobos are both Mexican-born but they've been moved to the United States, where they became ardent about their work.

Both the Mexican government and American financers invested in Under the Same Moon, an American film that was started in an American studio before Riggen made the decision to direct it independently. In 2007, the film at the Sundance Film Festival was extremely well received. In addition, the film received the 2008 ALMA Outstanding Spanish Language Motion Picture Award, as well as both the 2008 Best Director and Best Film Imagen Foundation awards.

In 2010, she was chosen to direct Lemonade Mouth, the 2011 Disney Channel original film. On its first night, the film attracted over 7 million viewers and was well-received. The work of Riggen on this film was nominated for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children's Programs by the Directors Guild of America Awards category.

Eva Mendes and Patricia Arquette are starring Eva Mendes and Patricia Arquette in upcoming feature films. She has continued to direct feature films, with Revolución (2010) and Girl in Progress (originally titled Ansiedad) starring Eva Mendes and Patricia Arquette. In 2012, the film was released. Girl in Progress, Riggen's opinion, may have been a crossover film that attracted a large audience as a young woman lead with a feminine lead who just happens to be Latina led, but it was discovered that it would only be directed to a Hispanic audience. Espinoza Paz was a film actress who had a following and appeared in front of an audience she was given and casting actresses with their own fanbases.

The 33, a film based on the 2010 Copiapó mining accident, was Riggen's next film. In August 2015, the film was first released in Chile, coincident with the mine's five-year anniversary. It was then distributed in Latin America before heading to theaters in the United States and the rest of the world in November 2015.

Riggen expressed delight at the prospect that a woman would direct a film with such masculine subject matter when approached in 2010 to direct The 33. The 33 was shot in Chile's Atacama Desert, as well as two mines in Colombia. Riggen's aim was to have the cast and crew know what being a miner is like.

Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, and Eugenio Derbez, a Christian contemporary story based on the book of the same name, chronicled the illness and miraculous recovery of a young girl in Texas in 2016. Riggen, the producer of Miracles from Heaven, is the first Latin woman director in 12 years (as of 2016) to have a film appear in the top 100 annual box office films.

Riggen's film career grew in 2018 to television. She jumped right in, directing three episodes of the Amazon TV Series Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski. This violent political drama was based on Tom Clancy's character, Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who specializes in T-FAD (Terror, Finance, and Arm Division). "Black 22" by Riggen is a satire book that includes "End of Fear" and "The Boy" by Season 1, Episode 3 – "The Boy." Riggen said she was able to experience new genres while working on episodic television. She found that she was very comfortable shooting the violent combat sequences and focusing on a sense of personality and success.

Riggen appeared alongside Danny Strong on his Hulu mini-series, Dopesick, in 2021. Dopesick's Michael Keaton is based on the novel Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy. "The Whistleblower" and Episode 5 – "Hammer the Abusers," Riggen-directed Season 1 Episode 5 – "The Whistleblower" and Episode 6 – "Hammer the Abusers." While filming Dopesick, Riggen faced the biggest challenge was finding amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Young people should be aware of what's going on and the dangers involved with addictive prescription drugs, according to Riggen.
