Although Patricia was married to Altschul, the couple were inveterate party goers. After the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, a New York Times reporter published an article about whether people should attend parties like the forthcoming gala for New Yorkers For Children in the aftermath of 9/11.

She interviewed Patricia and wrote:

Altschul's fame (and contributions) enabled her to be elected to the Board of the New York Historical Society and the Rockefeller family's Hudson Hills Trust. In New York Magazine, poet Jay McInerney referred to her as one of New York's "Big Girls" – "the wives (and widows) who are the keepers of the benefit circuit." The Altschuls were frequently seen with Melania and Donald Trump's friends, Georgette Mosbacher, Deeda Blair, and Carolyn Roehm, former Henry Kravis and a fashion consultant in Manhattan.

Arthur and Patricia Altschul purchased the 15-room Long Island estate "Southerly" overlooking Oyster Bay from Ambassador Hushang & Maryam Ansary in 1997. Mario Buatta was hired to redecorate. Mrs. Altschul later told The New York Times, "the view is enchanting and magical: you can see the water from every room in the house."

Patricia decided to put "Southerly" up for auction after Arthur's death and return to the South. "While the allusions to F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jazz Age parties are trite, it's impossible not to think of them when it comes to the 10,000-square-foot Long Island home, which is up for auction for $16 million."
