Life and career
Martin, a native of Westport, Connecticut, began modeling at 17 and appeared in The Poseidon Adventure in 1972, age 19. Our Time and Buster, and Billie were among the many films that followed.
Nancy Drew's work as ABC-TV's Nancy Drew made her something of a teen idol later in life. The ABC program alternated between The Nancy Drew Mysteries and The Hardy Boys Mysteries each week. The shows were combined and renamed The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries in season 2, which resulted in Nancy's appearance being reduced. Martin, who ended the series as a result, was enraged. Nancy's last appearance as Nancy aired on January 1, 1978.
Martin appeared in a cover picture in Playboy magazine's July 1978 issue, headlined "TV's Nancy Drew Undraped." She cited the union of the two shows as the reason for her disbanding of the series in the magazine.
On ABC nighttime soap opera Dynasty, Martin portrayed feisty and spoiled heiress Fallon Carrington Colby from 1981 to 1984. The character was first introduced as "missing and presumed dead" after Martin left (on her own initiative). At the end of the fifth season in 1985, the series recasts actress Emma Samms' role.
On February 16, 1985, Martin hosted Saturday Night Live. She was artistic director of the Interplanetary Theater Group in Idaho in the 2000s. Since being a child, she has worked in film and television.
Martin has talked about her struggle with interstitial cystitis. Martin, a long-serving environmentalist, appeared in 1984 in a public service announcement to help save pink dolphins in the Amazon River. Clyde Lucas, who appeared on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, produced the commercial.
