Oswald Pohl Career

Early life and career

Oswald Pohl was born in Duisburg-Ruhrort on June 30, 1892, to blacksmith Hermann Otto Emil Pohl and his partner, Auguste Pohl (née Seifert); he was the fifth of eight children. His parents were financially stable, and he attended a Realgymnasium where he studied classical Greek and Latin texts. From what Pohl said, he always wanted to study science but his father didn't have the means to send him straight to university. In 1912, he became a sailor in the Imperial Navy. He served in the Baltic Sea and Flanders' coast during World War I. Pohl graduated from a navy academy and became the paymaster on April 1, 1918. He married on the 30th of October of the same year.

Pohl attended law and state studies at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel after the war, but soon dropped out of university and became paymaster for the Freikorps "Brigade Löwenfeld" in Berlin, Upper Silesia, and the Ruhr valley. He was accepted into the Reichsmarine, the Weimar Republic's new navy, in 1920, like many others in the Lüttwitz-Kapp Putsch family. In 1924, Pohl was moved to Swinemünde.

SS career

Pohl, a year later, became a member of the SA and later joined the re-founded Nazi Party on February 22nd, 1926 as member #380842. Pohl joined the SS in 1929. "I was a National Socialist before National Socialism came into being," Pohl declared in 1932. He encountered Heinrich Himmler in 1933, bringing his attention to Admiral Wilhelm Canaris' behest, who referred to Pohl as a "energetic" officer and a "dedicated Nazi." After the first meeting at a Kiel Biergarten, Pohl quickly made himself available to the younger Himmler. Although he already presided over up to 500 men in his service in the German Navy as a hero in the war, he was captivated to be a commissioned officer in Himmler's SS. Pohl told Himmler that he will continue to serve him until he died and rose quickly as a result of his "ruthlessness" and his unwavering "loyalty."

Pohl, an officer in the SS, jumped straight into action, bringing his 20-plus years of administrative experience to bear; the SS accounting firm was able to pass a public audit, which earned him more respect from national agencies for Himmler's SS. Pohl was a natural recruiter for the first time. Due to Pohl's efforts, capable administrative officers were recruited and posted to the concentration camps. Pohl was eventually promoted to head the administration branch of the Reichsführer-SS. When Hemler made him administrative head over the SD Main Office and the Race and Settlement Office on June 1, 1935, his career flourished. Both Paul Weickert and Gerhard Schneider, two of Pohl's predecessors, were barred from the service for embezzlement. At Himmler's request, Pohl founded "Gesellschaft zur Förderung und Pflege der German Cultural Monuments"), which was primarily devoted to the restoration of Wewelsburg, an old castle that was supposed to be turned into a cultural and scientific headquarters. The "society" became a member of Pohl's SS administration department soon. In 1935, Pohl left the Roman Catholic Church.
