Omoni Oboli (born 22 April 1978) is a Nigerian actor, scriptwriter, film editor, and a certified digital filmmaker.
She studied at the New York Film Academy and has written several screenplays, including: The Figure (2009), Anchor baby (2010), Fatal Imagination, Being Mrs Elliott, The First Lady, and Wives on Strike (2016).
Early life and education
Oboli was born in Benin City, Edo State. She is a descendant of Mosogar, a small village in Delta State, Nigeria. After completing her secondary school education, Omoni Oboli went to University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in French. Following the completion of her first degree, Omoni Oboli went to study at the New York Film Academy, where she specialized in digital editing in a 4-week workshop.
Career
Omoni began acting in Bitter Encounter (1996), where she played a secretary. Shame came next. She went on to play the lead female role in three major films, including Not My Will, Destined To Die, and Another Campus Tale. After a short career in 1996, Omoni left the movie industry to complete her university education. She married right after school but did not return to work until a decade later. She said she almost made her quit film when she said she did. She returned to the screen in 2009, but she soon realized that there is no room for her. Then she decided to begin making her own films.
Omoni has several screenplays to her name, including her film Wives On Strike and The Rivals, a film she co-produced with her friend and received the Grand Prize for Best International Drama at the New York International Film & Video Festival. It was the first Nigerian film to be premiered since the festival's inception in 2003. The festival's judges gave the film a 3-star rating out of four. Omoni Oboli has appeared in mainstream films, including: The Figurine (2009), Anchor Baby (2010), Being Mrs Elliot, and Fifty (2015). In the same year (2010), she became the first actress from Nollywood to win Best Actress in two international festivals (that are not run by Nigerians or Africans).
