Acting career

James attended the Guildford School of Acting and made his acting debut in School's Out as Dean, a made-for-television short film. He appeared in an episode of The Afternoon Play on BBC television.

James was cast as Ian Wallace in the teen romantic comedy What a Girl Wants in 2002. Dennie Gordon and co-starred Amanda Bynes, directing the film. The film was released in 2003, to mixed critical reception and a modest box office with international revenues of $50,732,139.

In 2004, James was cast to act Jay Corgan in New Line Cinema's musical drama film Raise Your Voice. Sean McNamara and co-starring Hilary Duff appeared in the film. Critics generally dismissed the film as a box-office bomb, earning $14,867,514.

In 2006, James joined the BBC drama television show The Innocence Project portrayed Nick Benitz' role. Critics have scathingly dismissed the eight-episode's first season. Ratings were poor and the BBC decided to cancel the series midway through season one, although the show was not renewed for a second season.

In 2009, James portrayed Ben in Paramount Home Entertainment's Direct-to-DVD sequel Without a Paddle: Nature's Calling. The film received critical feedback.

In 2011, James appeared in a leading role in the television film Roadkill. In 2012, he appeared in the television film Black Forest.

Music career

James joined a boy band formed by Simon Fuller just after appearing in The Afternoon Play. He left the band as soon as he was cast in What A Girl Wants. He learned to play the guitar and performed the songs "Long Time Coming" and "The Most Ever Told" on the film's soundtrack. In Raise Your Voice, he played the acoustic guitar and performed the last song.
