Acting career

James attended the Guildford School of Acting and made his acting debut in School's Out as Dean, a made-for-television short film. He appeared in an episode of The Afternoon Play on BBC television.

James was cast as Ian Wallace in the teen romantic comedy What a Girl Wants in 2002. Dennie Gordon and co-starred Amanda Bynes, directing the film. The film was released in 2003, to mixed critical reception and a modest box office with international revenues of $50,732,139.

In 2004, James was cast to act Jay Corgan in New Line Cinema's musical drama film Raise Your Voice. Sean McNamara and co-starring Hilary Duff appeared in the film. Critics generally dismissed the film as a box-office bomb, earning $14,867,514.

He learned to play the guitar and performed the songs "Long Time Coming" and "The Most Ever Told" on the film's soundtrack. In Raise Your Voice, he played the acoustic guitar and performed the last song.
