Nik Richie Career

Internet career

Richie founded TheDirtyScottsdale.com in March 2007, after living in Scottsdale, Arizona, while researching DirtyScottsdale.com. Richie's personal critique of Scottsdale and its club scene was the starting point of Dirtyscottsdale.com's website was originally focused on Richie's personal opinion of the Scottsdale and its club scene. The latest and most popular version of TheDirty.com lets users anonymously upload their own "dirt" such as news, gossip, accusations, photos, movies, or text, as well as comment on others' posts.

Richie's website operated anonymously until September 4, 2008, when he was jailed in Scottsdale for DUI and reckless driving. Richie allegedly "outed" himself and revealed his true identity after news of his detention revealed.

Richie upgraded the look of TheDirty.com from a "goossip" website to a more advanced celebrity news portal in 2016.

Richie said in a Facebook post in March 2019 that he was no longer affiliated with TheDirty.com and that he had'retired' from the site in April 2018.

Richie has been the defendant in several lawsuits involving content on TheDirty.com. Richie has argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields him from liability, like the operators of other blogs and websites that encourage third party users to post material.

At least one federal court in Missouri accepted this argument, finding that a lawsuit against Richie was barred by the CDA. S.C. vs. Dirty World LLC was a lawsuit involving a blog named "Dirty Church Girl" that was submitted to TheDirty.com by a third-party user. The young woman named in the article sued Richie for defamation and other allegations, but the court found that Richie was entitled to exemption under the Communications Decency Act in March 2012.

A federal court in Kentucky came to the opposite conclusion in another, widely reported lawsuit, Sarah Jones vs. Dirty World Entertainment Recordings, LLC, finding that Richie was not entitled to CDA rights in a lawsuit arising from many articles about Kentucky high school teacher and part-time cheerleader Sarah Jones. Jones was awarded $338,000 in compensatory and punitive damages by the jury. Richie, on the other hand, appealed the decision to the Sixth Circuit in the United States, which ordered it to be vacated and dismissed in June 2014.
