Niels Gade Life

Niels Wilhelm Gade (22 February 1817-1890) was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, organist, and educator.

He is regarded as the most influential Danish musician of his day.

Personal life

Emma Sophie Amalie Hartmann, the daughter of Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann, was born on April 27th, 1852. With piano concertante as a wedding gift, he dedicated his Spring Fantasy to her to celebrate their engagement and his 5th Symphony. She died in childbirth when giving twins in 1855, but only one of them, Johan Felix Gade (1855-1928), survived. Niels Rudolph Gade, a pianist and composer, became his father.

In 1857, Niels Gade married Mathilde Stger, herself an outstanding pianist. Fruehlingsbotschfaft wrote a letter to his then-death first wife and the beginning of a new life and admiration for his second wife. Two more children were born during his second marriage: Axel Wilhelm Gade (1859-1921), who himself became a celebrated violinist, composer, and conductor, and his daughter, Dagmar Gade (1863-1952). Niels Gade died in Copenhagen in the 1890s during the Christmas season.
