Club career

Barella, a Cagliari Calcio born in Cagliari, is a youth delegate. He made his Serie A debut against Parma on May 4th, 2015, taking over Diego Farias after 68 minutes in a 4–0 home victory.

He was sent on loan to Como in Serie B, where he appeared as the first pick for the second half of the season in January 2016.

In a 2–0 home victory over SPAL on September 17, he scored his first professional and Serie A goal against them.

Barella joined Inter Milan on a year-long loan agreement, with the promise of a four-year loan repayment starting after the loan term comes into effect. He made his club debut against Lecce on August 26th, helping with Matas Vecino's second half victory and later helped set up Antonio Candreva's goal in Inter's first match of the 2019–20 Serie A season. He made his Champions League debut against Slavia Prague on September 17th, after coming off the bench for Marcelo Brozovi in the second half, he scored an injury-time equalizing goal to help Inter in their 1-1 home draw, his first goal in the competition and for Inter. Inter came from behind to defeat Verona 2–1 on 9 November, he scored his first league goal for the team. In the quarter-finals of the tournament, he scored his first goal in the Coppa Italia on January 29, 2020, defeating Fiorentina 2–1 home victory.

Barella played for the first time in Arturo Vidal's 2–0 home victory over rivals and defending champions Juventus on January 17th. He earned the Scudetto and was named Best Midfielder by Lega Serie A in the 2020–21 Serie A Championship, as well as included (for the third time in a row) in the 2020–21 Serie A Team of the Year.

Barella agreed to a long-term deal with Inter on November 5, 2021, extending his contract with the club until 2026. Barella won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana, collecting 12 assists, which is the most for an Inter player since Opta Sports began collecting such information in 2004-05. For the fourth year in a row, he was included in the 2021-22 Serie A Team of the Year.

International career

Barella was a member of the Italy U19 team at the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, finishing in second place in second place.

He was a member of the Italy U20 national team and placed third in third place at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Rome.

Barella made his Italy U21 debut against Spain on September 1st, 2017.

He was in Italy's squad for UEFA Euro 2020 in June 2021. Manuel Locatelli scored his second goal in Italy's second group match, which allowed Italy to advance to the round of 16. In a 2–1 victory over Belgium in the quarterfinals of the competition, he scored Italy's first goal of the season and later assisted Lorenzo Insigne's goal. Barella won the European Championship with Italy following a 3–2 draw in extra time at Wembley Stadium on July 11th, but Bryan Cristante was brought to the game as the second half of regulation time.

Barella scored the first goal in a 2–1 home win over Belgium in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League bronze medal match.
