Newton's sixth studio album was released on September 1, 2017. Though this focused on the intricate guitar and percussive guitar work that was a part of Newton's previous albums, it brought a deliberate attention to rhythm as well as another blues-tinged track "Finger Tip," which was released as the third single and follow-up to "All She Needs." Hit The Ground Running's tenth anniversary of Newton's debut album Hand Built by Robots included several deliberate references to that track; the opening track "Smoked Ice Cream" (a track that had no name until a shoutout from a crowd of people attending a gig) featured a slowly picking melody before the vocals came to a halt before the vocals came into a chorus on a single acoustic guitar before a word was yelled The placement of the only instrumental track in Hit the Ground Running is also a nod to "Sitar-Y-Thing," which was also a nod to splitting Hand Built by Robots into two halves. Newton produced an acoustic version of the full Hand Built by Robots album as a free gift to his followers, as well as a YouTube video of him performing each song in a new environment and in the same order as the original one.
