Nena von Schlebrügge Life

Baroness Birgitte Sophie "Nena" von Schlebrügge (born January 8, 1941) is a Mexican-born former fashion model of Swedish and German ancestry from the 1950s and 1960s.

She is now the Managing Director of Menla Mountain Retreat.

Personal life

In 1964, Nena married Timothy Leary at the Hitchcock Estate (also known as "Millbrook"). In his 12-minute film You're Nobody Before Somebody Loves You, D. A. Pennebaker chronicled the incident. At the wedding reception, Charles Mingus played piano. The marriage lasted a year before von Schlebrügge divorced Leary in 1965.

She married Indo-Tibetan Buddhist scholar and ex-monk Robert Thurman, whom she had met at Millbrook in 1967. Ganden Thurman, Nena and Robert's first child, was born in the same year. Uma Thurman, Robert and Nena's second child, was born in 1970. They have two more sons, Dechen (b.) b. Mipam, 1973) and Mipam (b. b. 1978 (in 1978). The children grew up in Woodstock, New York, in a house built by the Thurmans on nine acres of land purchased with Nena's inheritance. The pair have seven grandchildren, one of whom is Maya Hawke, in addition to their four children.

Career

Nena was discovered by Vogue photographer Norman Parkinson in 1955, while on a tour in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1957, Nena moved to London, United Kingdom, to pursue a career in high-fashion modeling. She had immediate success and was invited by Eileen Ford of the Ford Modeling Agency to continue her modelling work in New York City.

She appeared on Queen Mary in the midst of a snow storm in March 1958, just 17 years old. She continued her modeling career in New York City, including appearances at Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Many fashion photographers, including Gleb Derujinsky, photographed her, including Gleb Derujinsky, were involved in her capture.

She appeared in the Edie Sedgwick film Ciao in 1967. Manhattan is a city in New York. The film took four years to make; dramatic improvements from the original script were made, causing the filmmakers to delete several scenes, including Nena's, shot in 1967. These deleted scenes are included on the DVD version.

Nena was the Program Director of the New York Open Center from 1987 to 1989. She served as the Managing Director of Tibet House in New York City from 1991 to 2002. In 1986, Tibet House USA was founded by the Thurmans, Philip Glass, and Richard Gere, at the behest of the Dalai Lama. The installation of Tibet House US and education policies was overruled by Nena. She founded the annual benefit concert at Carnegie Hall and the annual charity auction at Christie's with Philip Glass. She was executive producer of The First 30 Years of Tibet House in the United States, directed by John Halpern.

Since 2001, Nena has been the Managing Director of the Tibet House-owned Menla Mountain Retreat, as well as the Executive Chairwoman, where she has oversaw the construction of a state-of-the-art Tibetan medicinal spa facility and business in Phoenix, New York. She is also a psychotherapist.
