Nathaniel Ramsey Life

Nathaniel Ramsey (May 1, 1741–October 23, 1817) was an American lawyer and soldier from Cecil County, Maryland.

Ramsey served in the Revolutionary War and was a member of the Confederation's Congress.

Life

Ramsey was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was David Ramsay's older brother, though the brothers pronounced their names differently. In 1767, he graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) and then read statutes. In 1771, he settled in northeastern Maryland and was admitted to the bar in Cecil County. Around 1771, Ramsey was married to Margaret Jane Peale, who is known to her family as Jenny. Following the Battle of Brooklyn, Margaret Jane Peale Ramsey accompanied the Continental Army on a daily basis.

Margaret died in 1788. Ramsey married Charlotte Hall, daughter of Colonel Aquilla Hall (1727-179), a prominent resident of Harford County, Maryland, Maryland.

He was the brother-in-law of artist Charles Willson Peale, who is best known for his portrait paintings of leading figures of the American Revolution and the establishment of one of the first museums in the United States.
