Nathan Jackson Life

Nathan Jackson (born August 29, 1938) is an Alaska Native artist. * He is one of the most influential living Tlingit artists and one of Alaska's most influential artists. * He is best known for his totem poles, but he also works in a variety of outlets. On the Raven side of the Chilkoot Tlingit, Jackson belongs to the Sockeye clan. * As a youth, he served in Germany's military and then became interested in commercial fishing. * Although ill with pneumonia and unable to fish, he started to carve miniature totem poles. * His fascination with art was piqued, and he enrolled in the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. * Since then, Jackson has produced large totem poles, canoes, carved doors, wood panel clan crests, masks, and jewelry. Jackson has worked to teach traditional Tlingit carving techniques to younger artists, as well as other museums in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Other totem poles are displayed outside Juneau's Centennial Hall, Totem Bight State Historical Park, At the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Totem Bight, Alaska, and the University of Alaska Southeast's Totem Bight State Historical Park. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Fellowship, a Rasmuson Foundation Distinguished Artist Award (2005). * His wife and son are both artists.
