Natalie Dessay Life

Natalie Dessay (1966) is a French singer, actress, and well-known for her debut as an operatic coloratura soprano. In performances such as Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, the title role in Lakmé, Zerbinetta in Ariadne on Naxos, and The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, she received acclaim.

She revived 19-century bel canto roles, including Amina in La sonnambula, Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La traviata, and Baroque music in her later careers.

Since being released from opera on October 15, 2013, she has pursued a career in theatre and in concert, where she now appears on classical, besides classical genres such as jazz and chansons. She has released scores of recordings under the EMI Classics and Virgin Classics brand, as well as under Warner Classics/Erato Records.

She has been recording under Sony Classical Records since 2016.

Early and personal life

Nathalie Dessaix, born in Lyon, was raised in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, where she had a few singing lessons with madame Saintrais, a former chorister at the Bordeaux Opera. Natalie Wood's silent "h" in her first name was spelled back to her in honor of her grandmother, who later changed the spelling of her surname. She aspired to be a ballet dancer and then an actress in her youth. She began taking acting lessons with Gérard Laurent at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux after abandoning German. Her vocal skills were discovered when playing a lutin in Molière's Le Sicilien ou l'Amour peintre, after which she was encouraged to take singing lessons. She joined the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse after winning the first prize. In 1988, she won the first edition of the competition "Voix Nouvelles" run by France Télécom and was given a year of study at the Paris Opera's "École d'art lyrique," where she appeared Elisa in Mozart's Il re pastore. In 1990, she received first prize at the International Mozart Competition in Vienna. Until 1991, she worked with her private tutor, tenor Jean-Pierre Blivet.

Dessay was first introduced to bass-baritone Laurent Naouri in 1989. They married in August 1994 and she converted to Judanism. Tom-Solal (b. ) and the couple's two children. 1995-1994) and Nema-Judith (b. (1998). The family lives in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire.

A number of regional theatres and actors were quick to approach Dessay, including Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Madame Herz (Der Schauspieldirektor), Zerbinetta (Ariadne on Naxos), and Madame Herz (Die Entführung durch die Serail). At the Opéra de Marseille, Bettina (Don Procopio) in 1990, she sang Barbarina (The Marriage of Figaro) at the Opéra de Marseille, Bettina (Don Procopio). She appeared in Olympia, Blonde, Zerbinetta, her best-known and most often performed parts, as well as Italian Singer (Capriccio), Aminta (Die schweigsame Frau), Fiakermilli (Arabella) with the organization.

In The Magic Flute's production in Robert Carsen's staging to critical acclaim, Dessay performed her first Queen of the Night. She continued to work in productions at the Opéra National de Lyon, Salzburg Festival, Opéra Bastille, Vienna State Opera. She made her New York Metropolitan Opera debut with Fiakermilli in October 1994. She first appeared in Lakmé at the Opéra-Comique in 1995, and in The Tales of Hoffmann, she first appeared in Lakmé as a princess. She appeared in Hamlet's role as Ophélie opposite Simon Keenlyside; the Grand Théâtre de Genève's new production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier was revived in 2003 with her in the role of Ophélie;

She appeared in Stravinsky's The Nightingale, directed by Pierre Boulez, and staged by Stanislas Nordey at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1997. In September, Zerbinetta returned to the Metropolitan Opera in September, then returning to Lyon's Orphée aux enfers. In 1998, she appeared in Olympia at the Met and in Lyon later this year, she appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Aspasia in Mozart's Mitridate, re di Ponto. She took on the role of Amina in La sonnambula at the Lausanne Opera in 1999. She collaborated with William Christie on several projects, including Carsen's latest creation, Handel's Alcina, which premiered at the Palais Garnier and later staged at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Andrei Serban's latest version of Rameau's Les Indes galantes, which opened the new Paris Opera season.

In Robert Carsen's latest creation, The Tales of Hoffmann, premiering on March 22, 2000 at the Opéra Bastille, Dessay was Olympia. She appeared in Hamlet at the Théâtre du Capitole and later at the Théâtre du Châtelet. At the Chorégies d'Orange, she began the new Jérôme Savary's performance as Olympia. Later this year, she reprised Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, then interpreted the Queen of the Night for the final time at Palais Garnier on December 24, 2000.

Opening La sonnambula in La Scala in 2001, Dessay began in 2001. She appeared in Die schweigsame Frau at the Théâtre du Châtelet in February.

Dessay began to have vocal difficulties and had to be re-inserted in almost every one of La sonnambula's performances. She was forced to cancel several other performances, including the French version of Lucia di Lammermoor in Lyon and a Zerbinetta at the Royal Opera House in London, later this year. In July 2002, she resigned from the stage and underwent surgery to repair a vocal cord nodule.

She appeared in Ariadne on Naxos at the Met in March 2003 and later this year appeared in Laurent Pelly's debut of the opera at the Palais Garnier. She gave her first US recital in Santa Fe in the summer of 2003. She was so drawn to New Mexico in general and Santa Fe in particular that the Santa Fe Opera rescheduled its dates to include her in a new version of La sonnambula during the 2004 season. She appeared at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and first Massenet's Manon at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2004.

She departed from Ariadne on Naxos at the Opéra Bastille in 2005/05 season and canceled concert appearances at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. She underwent surgery to eliminate a polyp on the other vocal cord and began vocal training subsequently.

On May 8th, 2005, Dessay appeared on stage at the Opéra de Montréal for a charity concert and later in the month, he appeared in Haydn's The Creation at the Festival de Saint-Denis. Juliette debuted in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette as Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera in November. She appeared in the premiere on November 14th, but it was recalled in the following performances. Pamina in The Magic Flute was back to Santa Fe Opera in July 2006. Lucia di Lammermoor at the Opéra Bastille opened the Paris Opera season in September and then performed La sonnambula in concert version at the Opéra de Lyon and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the former of which was recorded and released on CD.

Dessay appeared in the premiere of Laurent Pelly's La fille du régiment at Covent Garden in 2007 and its reprise at the Vienna State Opera in 2007. In the new Mary Zimmerman production of Lucia di Lammermoor, she appeared in Manon at the Liceu in Barcelona in June/July and began the season. She returned to sing Lucia again in the same season and then reprised in Pelly's production of La fille du régiment. She returned to the theatre twice, in London (2010) and Paris (2012). She appeared Lucia at the San Francisco Opera and a joint concert with tenor Jonas Kaufmann as part of the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier. She appeared Manon at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in October 2008.

In January 2009, she appeared in Mélisande, a much-acclaimed version of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Theater an der Wien. Dessay premiered in Zimmerman's latest La sonnambula at the New York Metropolitan Opera on March 2, 2009. After 37 years after Renata Scotto's appearance, the opera's revival at the company was resurgent. In a production by Laurent Pelly with her husband Laurent Naouri appearing as Giorgio Germont, she gave her first appearance in the role of Violetta in La traviata at Santa Fe Opera on July 3rd 2009. In October, she appeared in Musetta at the Opéra Bastille in La Bohème.

In 2010, Dessay appeared in La sonnambula at the Opéra Bastille. She cancelled the final two performances in the run as well as the forthcoming Hamlet at the Met, where Marlis Petersen was replaced by Marlis Petersen due to sickness. After appearing at the Vienna State Opera in her last La sonnambula, she was given the honor of Austrian Kammersängerin. On June 18, she appeared in Russia for the first time as a soloist with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and on September 17th, she appeared in the theatre's 150th anniversary concert. She appeared in a joint concert with Juan Diego Flórez at the Chorégies d'Orange before heading to Teatro Regio di Torino's Japan tour of La traviata.

She debuted in Handel's Giulio Cesare, a concert conducted by Emmanuelle Ham, in 2011. Ill, she was replaced by Canadian soprano Jane Archibald in several appearances, who also shared the role. She returned to the Met for Lucia in Pelléas et Mélisande in concert form at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Barbican Centre before heading to Moscow for a concert version of Lucia with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. In a new production of La traviata, she portrayed Violetta at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, which later reprised in the same role at the Vienna State Opera. The development of the film in France was shot as part of the 2012 film Becoming Traviata.

Dessay appeared in the premiere of Coline Serrenet's Manon in the Opéra Bastille in January 2012. She returned to the Met in April for Willy Decker's production of La traviata, where she was interrupted by Hong Hei-kyung on the first night and again after the first act due to a cold. She had intended to appear all major heroines in The Tales of Hoffmann at the Salle Pleyel, but she had to cancel due to unspecified reasons and was replaced by Sonya Yoncheva. She limited herself to Antonia in 2013 as part of Pelly's revival of the same opera, which took place at the Liceu and the San Francisco Opera. In April 2013, she appeared as Cleopatra in David McVicar's production of Giulio Cesare at the Metropolitan Opera in April 2013.

Dessay revealed in June 2013 that the Manon de Manon descriptive role at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse would be her last operatic appearance. She had speculated about withdrawing from opera appearances in 2015. She described her retirement as "opera is quitting her" because she had fulfilled all the roles appropriate for her light soprano voice and had no intention to be further associated with them.

In concerts, Dessay had worked with Michel Legrand on a number of occasions. She gave two concerts of songs written by him in Toulouse in May 2009. Entre elle et lui, a joint album released in 2013 by the two bands.

Portraits of America, Edward Hopper's paintings, was released in 2016. Soleil dans une pièce vide, a contemporary French prose poem based on Hopper paintings by poet Claude Esteban's award-winning collection of forty-seven poems, got off the idea by selecting eight French prose poems based on Hopper paintings (Sun in an Empty room, 1991). These were set to music by composer Graciane Finzi, as well as recording with reading by Dessay. These poems were enhanced by ten more Hopper paintings and songs from the American songbook to go with them.
