Cassidy attended the Anna Scher Theatre as an infant. She appeared on EastEnders in 1993, playing Sonia Jackson. Cassidy appeared in an episode of The Catherine Tate Show on BBC Two in 2006. Cassidy's departure from EastEnders was announced on the BBC on April 9, 2006, in her last scenes being shown in February 2007. She later concentrated on theatre, appearing in numerous UK tours of The Valiant Monologues, Bedroom Farce, and Gertrude's Secret opposite Prunella Scales, and a tour of The Cherry Orchard opposite Diana Rigg at the Chichester Festival Theatre opposite her husband.

Cassidy made news after losing a lot of weight and releasing a fitness DVD titled Natalie Cassidy's Then and Now Workout. Natalie Cassidy's Diet Secrets for BBC Three in 2008 appeared in the documentary Natalie Cassidy's Diet Secrets. She appeared on The Wright Stuff on Five in 2008 as a regular panelist. Cassidy gained media attention for cutting back her diet and regaining significant weight later this year. Cassidy appeared in a supporting role in the BBC Two comedy television series Psychoville in 2009, alongside Dawn French and Eileen Atkins.
