Little continued his high school career as one of the top-ranked students in his class, winning the Orlando Christian Prep state championships for the second time.

High school career
Little spent his freshman and sophomore seasons (2014–16) at Oakleaf High School before heading to Orlando Christian Prep, where he spent the remainder of his high school years. He led Orlando Christian Prep to back-to-back Florida state titles in his junior and senior seasons (2016-18). Little made a strong showing in the McDonald's All-American Game in 2018 as he led the West past the East and claim the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Since winning MVP awards at the Jordan Brand Classic, he also received MVP awards for his 24 points in 25 minutes. He joined LeBron James as the second player to receive MVP awards at both high school All-American games. The recruiting company Rivals ranked Little as the second-best high school prospect of the year.
College career
On October 4, 2017, Little committed to play for North Carolina. During North Carolina's 78-67 victory over the Wofford Terriers, he made his Tar Heels debut on November 6, 2018, scoring 7 points, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. North Carolina defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 103-82, with John Little scoring a career-high 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Little announced his decision to forego his college eligibility and apply for the 2019 NBA draft, where he was expected to be a first-round pick at the conclusion of his freshman season.
Professional career
Little was drafted with the 25th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft on June 20, 2019. Little officially signed with the Blazers on July 1, 2019.
Little starred for 30 points on February 1, 2021, along with 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Little suffered a left-hand labral tear on January 27, 2022. The Trail Blazers announced four days later that he would have surgery and would miss the remainder of the season. Little underwent abdominal surgery on May 9, 2009.
