Namal Rajapaksa Life

Lakshman Namal Rajapaksa (born 10 April 1986, also known as Namal Rajapaksa) is a Sri Lankan politician.

He is one of three sons of Sri Lankan former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a member of parliament.

Rajapaksa is widely believed to have been groomed to replace his father.

Early life and family

Rajapaksa was born on April 10, 1986. He is the son of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Shiranthi (née Wickremesinghe). Yoshitha and Rohitha are his two younger brothers. Don Alwin Rajapaksa, his paternal grandfather, served as a member of parliament and Minister of Agriculture and Land in Wijeyananda Dahanayake's government.

Rajapaksa was educated at Mount Lavinia's S. Thomas' College, where he captained the school's 1st XV rugby team. Rajapaksa went to Cardiff University to study law after school. He then enrolled in City University London from where he graduated in September 2009 with a third-class degree law degree.

Rajapaksa began preparing as an attorney at law at Sri Lanka Law College. He took the college's preliminary examination in October 2009 and graduated with second class honors. Rajapaksa was accused of sitting the exam in a special cubicle that had been reserved for him, and the college's principal accompanied him.

Several media reports said Rajapaksa underwent allegedly preferential treatment during his final examination at Sri Lanka Law College in December 2010. Surelyhara Jayarathna, a fellow law student, argued that Rajapaksa had been provided a separate room with an internet enabled computer, prompting a lawsuit against the Law College examination board, Keselwaththa police station, and the Supreme Court.

According to media and NGO reports, Jayarathna's allegations were largely ignored or rejected, although he appeared before the college authorities early in January 2011. After the shooting, reports stated that Jayarathna was reportedly kidnapped and beaten up by the police, and that he had received multiple death threats traced to the police and the college.

According to the college's principal, an investigation had been launched, but it found that the charges were "based on hearsay" and "unfounded." Although the official inquiry did not uncover any anomalies, Jayarathna's attacks on Jayarathna have not been investigated. The Colombo Telegraph announced that Jayarathna's reporting was not unusual, that he was one of many others who have been harassed or arrested after making allegations against the government family or the police. Chief Justice Asoka de Silva also challenged the probe, saying, "We have only one law college in Sri Lanka." If there are questions over its legitimacy, it will impact the whole industry."

On December 15, 2011 Rajapaksa was admitted as an attorney at law by a committee of Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

Personal life

On September 12, 2019 at Gangaramaya Temple, Namal married Limini Weerasinghe. In 2020, they have a son who was born in the United States.

Namal Rajapaksa Career

Sporting career

Rajapaksa played rugby for S. Thomas' College, representing the school in all age groups - under the age of 9, 13, 15, 15s, and 17s. He commanded the Sri Lankan national under 16 team in 2000. Rajapaksa was first a member of the school's senior team in 2002 and captained the 1st XV team in 2005. In 2004, he was also in charge of the Sri Lankan under 19 team.

He played in the university's rugby team from 2005 to 2006. From 2006 to 2009, he played for City University London. He began playing for the Navy SC in 2009, which he captained in 2010-2011. In 2010, Rajapaksa was invited to compete for the Sri Lanka national rugby union team, and in 2013 he was appointed captain of the team's captain, a position he held until retirement from competitive rugby in July 2014.

Political career

Rajapaksa stood in Parliament in 2010 as one of the United People's Freedom Alliance's candidates in Hambantota District and was elected to Parliament. The father of Rajapaksa served as an MP for Hambantota District for 16 years before becoming president in 2005. Rajapaksa is widely believed to have been groomed to replace his father. Rajapaksa is often seen at state functions and is often seen as the chief guests at ceremonies inauguration new roads, bridges, schools, and other government buildings. Although Rajapaksa has no official position, he has undertaken several official overseas trips, often accompanying his father. Rajapaksa led a parliamentary delegation to Libya in January 2011 and met with Muammar Gaddafi. Rajapaksa has also visited United Nations Headquarters (September 2010), Nepal (March 2011), Thailand (March 2012), South Korea (May 2012), China (May 2012), and Australia (June 2013). In addition, Rajapaksa was responsible for Hambantota's inability to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Rajapaksa was a central figure in his father's failed 2015 presidential bid. Many people suspected him of his father's demise and misusing public funds.

Business career

Rajapaksa and his brother Yoshitha own Carlton Sports Network, a sports, lifestyle, and business television network. Rajapaksa was a shareholder in Ascot Holdings PLC as at September 30, 2011, when he owned 92,000 shares (1.1 percent) in the company as of September 30th. Sri Lanka's new government has levied a one-time fee of LKR 1 billion on the country's sole sports television channel, which is part-owned by Namal Rajapaksa, claiming that the sports channel hasn't paid a single penny to the government since its inception. According to reports, the Rajapaksa regime favoured CSN, which gave it exclusive broadcast rights to numerous sports events, including cricket. Before the advent of CSN, cricket broadcast rights had been the monopoly of state television Rupavahini. The Rajapaksa government, led by Namal's father, had transferred the sports broadcasting rights to CSN by a cabinet decision without having a visible tender or any known competitive bidding process. After Rajapaksa's defeat in the 2014 presidential race in January 2015, President Maithripala Sirisena's new government opened an investigation into the rights pact.

After a civil group named Voice Against Corruption lodged a complaint against him to the FCID, Namal Rajapaksa is being investigated for money laundering. According to the lawsuit, a company owned by MP Namal Rajapaksa had purchased shares of another company using money obtained by unlawful means. As a result, Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that several bank accounts connected to the companies be frozen for further examination.

An arrest warrant was issued by Interpol on Oranella Iresha Silva, a perpetrator in an investigation launched under the Money Laundering Act in August 2016. Hellocorp is a company that uses allegedly fraudulent funds obtained by Namal's Gowers Corporation. Nithya Senani Samaranayake of the SriLankan Airlines was arrested and remanded in August 2016 for her work as a director in NR Consultations and Gowers Corporation. She was released from the airline at the behest of then Secretary to President Lalith Weeratunga's to handle Namal Rajapaksa's "special programs," but she continued to receive her basic salary as well as a "productivity allowance" in lieu of other perks and promotions. She was paid approximately Rs. 76 per month. The Airline claims that it is worth 70,500 per month, while another estimated Rs. The Presidential Secretariat charged 87,500. However, when she inquired, she was unable to specify the exact location where she worked except a Temple Trees restaurant, not the Presidential Secretariat. In addition, she was unable to recall any officials or the Presidential Secretariat's names until one and no "special projects" were identified where she was attached to. The CID arrested Iresha Silva, who was residing in Dubai on October 10, 2017.
