Burrell began his professional MMA career in 2010 after a 3–2 amateur career. He fought only for middle Atlantic states corporations. He signed with Strikeforce, despite his MMA record of 5-1.

Burrell made his debut against Joe Ray in May 20, 2011 at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum. He gained by a unanimous vote.

On August 12, 2011, Burrell met Lukasz Les at the Strikeforce Challengers: Gurgel vs. Duarte. In the second round, he defeated him via TKO.

Burrell met James Terry at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine on January 7, 2012. He won by a split decision.

Burrell had been set to face Bobby Voelker at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier on May 19, 2012, but Voelker had to cancel due to injury and was replaced by Chris Spang. In the first round, he was disqualified via TKO.

Burrell was supposed to meet Yuri Villefort on September 29, 2012 at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy. However, the tournament was postponed due to headliner and lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez's injury.

Burrell made his public debut against fellow Strikeforce import Yuri Villefort on February 23, 2013 at UFC 157. He won the back-and-forth war by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

On May 25, 2013, Burrell met Stephen Thompson at UFC 160. He lost the contest by a majority decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28), and was later barred from the service.

Burrell was supposed to make his promotional debut against Dante Rivera on November 15, 2013 at Bellator 108. Rivera was however dropped from the game due to undisclosed reasons, and Burrell then met Jesus Martinez. He was victorious by a majority decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Burrell met Andy Koreshkov in the quarterfinal match of Bellator Season Ten Welterweight Tournament on March 14, 2014 at Bellator 112. He was disqualified early in the first round via TKO at 0:41.

Burrell lost the match by unanimous vote on October 10, 2014, defeating Michael Page at Bellator 128.

Burrell made his promotional debut at ACB 72. Nonetheless, the match was postponed to ACB 75 on November 25, 2017 due to unknown causes. Isaev's admission to Germany was refused, and the match was called off. Burrell eventually met Beslan Isaev at ACB 77 on December 23, 2017. He was disqualified by a majority vote in the fight.

Burrell met Albert Tumenov on December 23, 2017 at ACB 80. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision in the fight.

Burrell won the ACB 84 battle against Arbi Ajev on April 7, 2018. He lost the war by a unanimous decision.

Burrell met Ron Stallings at CES MMA 52 on August 17, 2018, after a three-fight stint in ACB. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision.

Burrell was set to meet Gabriel Checco in the Final Fight Championship 38 on June 20, 2019. The match was postponed due to unknown reasons.

Burrell was then scheduled to meet Danny Davis Jr. at CFFC 85 on September 18, 2020. The bout was postponed due to unknown causes, but Burrell met Ryot Waller at CFFC 84 on September 17, 2020. He gained the fight by a second-round entry.

Burrell appeared at CFFC 90 on December 17, 2020, when he next met Moses Murrietta. He was able to win the first round by a knockout.

Burrell met Khetag Pliev at CFFC 99 on August 14, 2021. He won the fight by a third-round knockout.

On October 30, 2021, Burrell met Kyle Stewart at CFFC 102. He gained the fight by unanimous decision.

On March 11, 2022, Burrell faced Ikram Aliskerov at Eagle FC 46. Aliskerov lost weight for his fight at weigh ins. Aliskerov weighed in at 186.2 pounds, 0.2 pounds over the middleweight non-title maximum. The fight came to a halt, and Burrell was fined a swish of his money. He was disqualified by a unanimous vote.
