Early life
Mordechai Shpigler was born in Asbest, Soviet Russia, and is Jewish. When he was a child, he immigrated to Netanya, Israel.
Playing career
He played for Maccabi Netanya, France, alongside Paris Saint Germain and Pelé for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League in the 1970s as a striker.
In 1967–68, 1968–69, 1969–70, and 1970–71, he was named Israeli Player of the Year for the fourth time.
Shpigler made his international debut for Israel against Hong Kong on January 2nd, 1964. He was involved in the Israeli victory in the 1964 AFC Asian Cup and scored two goals in the tournament, making him the tournament's joint top scorer.
His greatest achievement was helping Israel qualify for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. In a 1–1 draw against Sweden, he scored Israel's lone goal in World Cup history.
His 32 goals for the national team (according to the IFA's count, FIFA has only 24 of them) were the Israeli national team's highest score until 2021. Shpigler scored 24 goals in 62 "official" internationals for the Israeli national team, although he played in 21 other 'unofficial' matches (mostly Olympic Games qualifiers) scoring eight more goals.
The Israeli Olympic team in Mexico City 1968, which reached the quarter-finals, lost by a draw to Bulgaria after the match ended 1–1.
Post-playing career
In the UEFA Jubilee Awards in November 2003, Spiegler was named as the best Israeli player of the previous 50 years by the Israel Football Association. Shpigler is a member of the IFA's Education and Publicity Committee.
He was given an Israel national team lifetime achievement award in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, judging by Yedioth Ahronoth and the Israeli football player association in 2007.
