Eran Zahavi Life

Eran Zahavi (born 25 July 1987) is an Israeli professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder or as a striker for Guangzhou R&F and Israel's national team. In 2013–14 (21 goals, all-time team record), and 2015–16 (35 goals, all-time team, and league record) Zahavi was named Israeli Footballer of the Year twice (2013 and 2014), and finished as the top goalscorer three seasons in a row in the Israeli Premier League in 2013–14 (29 goals, all-time club record).

After scoring for the 18th game in a row, Zahavi tied for the Israeli Premier League record for scoring in consecutive appearances.

He set a new Israeli league six-decade-old season scoring record in 2016, beating the 1954–55 record.

In 2017, he was named the 2017 Chinese Super League MVP and tied for the first time in the league's single season scoring record.

Zahavi has been a senior international since 2010, winning 50 caps.

Early life

Zahavi was born in Rishon LeZion, Israel, to Jewish parents. He has served in the Israel Defense Forces to complete his mandatory military service.

On account of his French-born father, he also has a French passport.

Personal life

Two armed robbers broke into Zahavi's house in Amsterdam on May 9th, ahead of his team PSV Eindhoven and Willem II's Eivisie match, tying up his wife Shay (née Levy) and three children. When Zahavi and his family were away on holiday in the United Kingdom, their house was also broken in on December 12th, 2021.

Club career

Zahavi began his youth with Hapoel Tel Aviv at the age of 6. In his hometown, Ironi Rishon LeZion, aged 16 years old, was a boy. He returned to Hapoel two years later, in 2005.

Zahavi, a youth product of Hapoel Tel Aviv, was promoted to its senior staff in 2006. After a thrilling match against fierce rivals Beitar Jerusalem in the last round of the season, with Hapoel, he won the 2009-10 Israel State Cup and the 2009–10 Israeli Premier League crown, in which he scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute. During the 2009–10 season, Zahavi was reported to have piqued the attention of Belgian clubs.

Zahavi was the top assist provider of Israel's Premier League during the 2010-11 season, averaging 13 assists during the season.

Zahavi joined Palermo, Italy's best Serie A club, before the 2011–12 Serie A season began. He played in the top league in Italy for two seasons, scoring two goals against Bologna and Cagliari.

Zahavi showed signs of returning to Israel in December 2012, shortly after the winter transfer window was opened. He was allowed seven days to make a bid on him after an agreement was reached between Palermo and Maccabi Tel Aviv, but his old club Hapoel Tel Aviv was not exploited due to a first-option provision in his deal. Maccabi Tel Aviv announced his arrival on January 21, 2013 after much speculation in the media, signing him to a three-and-a-half year contract for €250,000.

Zahavi scored a penalty to equalize the score at 1–1 in the first half, but a pitch invader struck the Tel Aviv crowd on Sunday, but the score was then struck by a pitch invader. He was sent home on retaliation, sparking more pitch invasions that culminated in the game being called off.

The previous record was set by striker Nissim Elmaliach, who scored 30 goals in 26 league games during the 1954–55 season.

After Liron Zarko, Zahavi joined Guangzhou R&F of the Chinese Super League on June 29, making him the second Israeli footballer in China. Zahavi received a reported $12.5 million over two-and-a-half years as part of the transfer agreement. Zahavi scored a 1–1 draw on July 2nd as his debut from the bench in his 60th minute against Shijiazhuang Ever Bright. He scored his first goal 15 minutes later and then aided his team in defeat by a 4–2 win.

Zahavi scored a hat-trick in 19 minutes in the Chinese FA Cup match against Hebei China Fortune on July 13th, coming from the bench and assisting R&F in a 3–0 victory. Zahavi netted his second hat-trick in an R&F jersey on October 18th, propelling the R&F to a 5–2 victory. Zahavi scored his 29th goal of the season in November 2019, beating the previous record set by Elkeson in 2014.

Zahavi signed a two-year contract with PSV Eindhoven, on September 20, 2020. On October 1, 2020, he made his Dutch debut for the Dutch side in the UEFA Europa League play-offs against Norwegian side Rosenborg, contributing to the 2–0 away victory with a goal and an assist.

Zahavi scored a hat-trick and assisted in a 5-1 win over Turkish side Galatasaray in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round match on July 21, 2021.

Zahavi was named Player of the Week by the UEFA Europa Conference League in March 2022 for his two-goal performance against Danish side Copenhagen in the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League, earning his team a 4–0 victory. Since scoring in each of the three games he played in March, he was also named Either of the Month in the same month. Zahavi scored his eighth European goal of the season against Leicester City in the Conference League quarterfinals, and tied Willy van der Kuijlen and Gerrie Deijkers, who both scored eight European goals for the club in the 1970s.

Zahavi left the club in the 2021–22 season after his deal was not renewed.

Zahavi returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv on a two-year deal on June 26, 2022, after previously playing for the club between 2013 and 2016.

International career

Zahavi made his senior debut for Israel against Malta in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers on September 2, 2010. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Russia, he scored his first goal for the national team on September 10, 2013.

During the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, he scored a hat-trick against Austria in a 4–2 home win.

During the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, Zahavi scored a back-to-back hat-trick against Latvia in a 3–0 away victory. Zahavi scored a total of 11 goals during the 2020 Euro qualifiers, becoming the second best overall goalscorer (along with Cristiano Ronaldo) in all qualifying classes, with only one goal behind Harry Kane.

Zahavi scored three goals in 20 minutes to bring Israel from 0–2 down to a 3–2 victory on October 14, 2020, during a UEFA Nations League B match against Slovakia. Zahavi was the second best goalscorer across all divisions of the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League (along with League A's Romelu Lukaku), and only a goal behind League B's Erling Haaland, with five goals.

Zahavi scored his fourth international hat-trick in a home match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Faroe Islands on September 1, 2021. He scored two goals in the World Cup qualifying match against Austria, which resulted in a 5–2 home win for Israel three days later. Despite missing the last two games due to illness, Zahavi still scored eight goals in the qualifiers and was rated as one of the best goal scorers in all qualifying rounds.

Zahavi resigned from the national team due to a hotel room fire whilst overseas service on September 15, 2022.
