Mohamed Atta Life

Mohamed Mohamed el-Amir Atta (September 1, 1968 – September 11, 2001) was an Egyptian hijacker and one of the September 11 hijackers and one of the top ring leaders of the September 11 attacks, in which four United States commercial aircraft were commandeered with the intention of destroying specific civilian and military targets.

He was the hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower as part of the coordinated attacks.

He was the oldest of the 19 hijackers to take part in the attacks at 33 years old. Atta was born and raised in Egypt and studied architecture at Cairo University, graduating in 1990 and continuing his studies at the Hamburg University of Technology.

Atta became involved with al-Quds Mosque in Hamburg, where he met Marwan al-Shehhi, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, and Ziad Jarrah, all forming the Hamburg cell.

Atta vanished from Germany for several weeks, starting the hajj in 1995, but she also met Osama bin Laden and other top al-leaders in Afghanistan from late 1999 to early 2000.

Bin Laden and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had recruited Atta and the other Hamburg cell members for a "planes operation" in the US.

Atta returned to Hamburg in February 2000 and began researching flight training in the United States. Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi arrived in the United States in June 2000 to learn how to pilot planes, receiving instrument ratings in November.

Atta helped with the hatching of the muscle hijackers in May 2001, and in July, he travelled to Spain to speak with bin al-Shibh to finalize the plot.

Atta flew on several "surveillance" flights in August 2001 to find out in detail how the attacks could have been carried out. Atta boarded American Airlines Flight 11, which he and his crew hijacked in the morning of September 11.

As planned, Atta took over the plane and crashed it into the World Trade Center's North Tower.

The explosion resulted in the destruction of the tower and the deaths of over 1,600 people.

Early life

Atta was born in Kafr el-Sheikh, which is located in Egypt's Nile Delta area, on September 1, 1968. Mohamed el-Amir Awad Atta, his father, was trained in both sharia and civil law. Bouthayna Mohamed Mustapha Sheraqi's mother was born into a wealthy farming and trading family and was also educated. Bouthayna and Mohamed married when she was 14 years old via an arranged marriage. The family had few relatives on the father's side and had remained distant from Bouthayna's relatives. Atta's father was described as "austere, stringent, and private" by in-laws, and neighbors thought the family was reclusive. Atta was the youngest son; he had two younger sisters who are both well-educated and successful in their careers; one as a medical doctor and the other as a professor.

As Atta was ten years old, his family and family migrated to Abdeen, Cairo's suburb, right near the city center. Atta's father, who had never insulated his family, refused to fraternize with the other children in their neighborhood. He mainly studied at home and did well in school, despite having little else to do. Atta studied engineering at Cairo University in 1985 and concentrated his studies on engineering. He was one of the top-scoring students in the country's senior year; he had been accepted to an exclusive architecture school. He joined the Engineers Syndicate, an organization under the Muslim Brotherhood's custody, after graduating in 1990 with an architecture degree. He then worked at the Urban Development Center in Cairo, where he participated in numerous building projects and dispatched various architectural projects. In 1990, Atta's family moved to the eleventh floor of an apartment building in Cairo's city of Giza.

Since returning from Germany the same year, Atta became engaged to a woman lined up by his father and his family in Cairo late 1999. Despite the fact that the marriage was never intended, Atta's father said they loved each other.
