Mitja Nikisch Career

Career

Mitja Nikisch was the son of the celebrated Hungarian orchestral conductor Arthur Nikisch and Belgian singer and composer Amélie Nikisch. He became a refined interpreter of classical works like his parents. Nonetheless, although respected in this field, he made his debut as piano soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on April 22, 1918, and collaborated with classical conductors including Wilhelm Furtwängler and Sir Henry J. Wood — he was most well-known as the leader of a well-known jazz band in Berlin during the Weimar Republic period. The band performed in trendy clubs and featured some of Germany's most popular artists; prominent guitarist Otto Sachsenhauer called it "the best dance band ever heard in Berlin."

Mitja himself returned to playing the piano, in the hopes of discovering where he had started his career as a concert performer. He was on a summer holiday in northern Italy when he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Alexandra Mironova, a woman from Moscow, had just fallen in love with him. She was twelve years old at the time and was a well-known soubrette in Berlin's Schillertheater under the pseudonym Barbara Diu. Barbara was her Barbara because he did not like her Russian name. When his cancer diagnosis arrived, the two were planning to marry. Knowing that he didn't have much time to live, he began to write a piano concerto. His magnum opus lasted several hours a day as his illness delivered a lot of energy. Nikisch completed the concert on Wednesday 5 August 1936 and died at the age of 37. When Barbara's fiancé died, she was in London on business. The handwritten score she found on her return to Venice was a recollection of an all-too-brief life, and Nikisch dedicated it to his wife.
