Mira Furlan Life

Mira Furlan (born 7 September 1955) is a Croatian actress and singer.

She is best known for her appearances on several seasons of the science fiction television series Babylon 5 (1993–98), as Danielle Rousseau on Lost.

In addition, she appeared in numerous award-winning films, including When Father Was Away on Business and The Abandoned.

Early life

Furlan was born in Zagreb, PR Croatia, which was once part of Yugoslavia, on September 7, 1955. Ivan Furlan, a mixed Slovene-Croat descent, was born to a Jewish Croatian mother, Branka Weil, and a father of mixed Slovene-Croat descent.

Furlan was obsessed with American rock and roll music as a child. She became interested in being a teenager.

Furlan obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. Simultaneously, she took language classes at the University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, becoming fluent in English, German, and French.

Personal life

Goran Gaji, who is an ethnic Serb, was Furlan's husband. He directed her in an episode of Babylon 5 and several plays, including a Sophocles' Antigone production.

Furlan was instrumental in the Yugoslav feminist movement in the 1980s.

Furlan performed in theater performances in both cities twice a month during the late 1980s. She was shot by the Croatian National Theater for refusing to work in a Belgrade theater company in 1991. When she began receiving threatening messages on her answering machine, an ensuing public smear campaign angered her coworkers and friends against her. Furlan wrote a public letter expressing her profound dissatisfaction with her coworkers and colleagues' behavior as well as the nationalists' threats against her. In November 1991, the couple emigrated to New York City in the early days of Yugoslavia's breakup.

Marko Lavv, the couple's only child, was born in 1998.

Furlan died at her Los Angeles home on January 20, 2021. In the time leading up to her death, she was 65, and she had been suffering from West Nile virus infections. Ivica Buljan, the theater's artistic director, apologised for the theater's treatment of Furlan in the early 1990s. A week later, Croatian weekly Globus released another apology for releasing three feuilletons attacking the actress in 1992, which was a vital part of the public smear campaign.
