Furlan performed in theater performances in both cities twice a month during the late 1980s. She was shot by the Croatian National Theater for refusing to work in a Belgrade theater company in 1991. When she began receiving threatening messages on her answering machine, an ensuing public smear campaign angered her coworkers and friends against her. Furlan wrote a public letter expressing her profound dissatisfaction with her coworkers and colleagues' behavior as well as the nationalists' threats against her. In November 1991, the couple emigrated to New York City in the early days of Yugoslavia's breakup.
